Bole Branch Office Golden Monday Morning Awareness and Knowledge Transfer Program was held.
Today, 3rd of Pagume 2017, the Bole Branch Office of the Addis Ababa City Administration Education and Training Quality Supervision Authority held a Golden Monday Awareness and Knowledge Transfer Program titled “Regarding the Abay Dam Program and its Completion.”
Ato Berhanu Tadesse Taye presented a training document prepared on the topic and what is its nature, introduction?
Objectives of the training.......
The importance of the training......
What were the negative and positive aspects of the construction of the Abay Dam from its inception to its completion.....
What are the future benefits of building the Abay Dam......
How much did it cost to build the Abay Dam..........
What is the importance of building the Abay Dam in terms of climate protection and environmental protection.......
What are the benefits of building the Abay Dam in terms of soil and water protection.........
How will building the Abay Dam reduce the desertification of our country's eco-system........
What is the importance of building and completing the Abay Dam in terms of putting our unemployed people into work..........
Ato Dawit, the General Manager of the branch, stated in the program that the topic presented in connection with the inauguration of the dam is timely. He stated that it is important to include projects like Abay in our work in order to achieve success.
He also expressed his best wishes for a beautiful and prosperous week, and wished that the coming new year will be a time when our country will increase its progress and realize its success. The discussion concluded with my sincere wishes for a happy new year! “Regarding the Abay Dam Program and Completion.”
The Addis Ababa City Administration Education, and Training Quality, Supervision Authority, Bole, Mi Kura and Yeka Branch Cluster Coordination Office held a motivational and educational discussion program on the first day of the week, every Monday morning.
The construction of the dam was completed with the cooperation of technocrats, engineers, financiers and millions of Ethiopians. This shows what can be said when different segments of society work together for a common goal. This culture of working together (Synergy) can be a model for all national projects. Despite political disagreements in our country’s affairs; It is not surprising that the delay in the completion of the dam is causing complaints. Therefore, it is known that there are various issues that do not suit us. Therefore, by giving our problems to the growth and development of the country and leaving aside the things that do not suit us, we have been able to complete the dam by creating a synergistic effect among citizens.Berhanu Taye:
This is my greeting from my bottom heart for you. Currently, I am a student in A.A.U, Ethiopia. I want to share you the problem that face us here in Ethiopia, with expect of little solution from you. Air pollution is
Dam Name Country Power Capacity
Key Environmental
Impacts
Notes
GERD Ethiopia ~6,450 MW
Potential increase in
humidity, vegetation,
biodiversity
Largest in Africa;
designed for hydropower
only
Three Gorges Dam China ~22,500 MW
Major displacement,
sedimentation,
biodiversity loss
World's largest;
significant ecological
trade-offs
Itaipu Dam Brazil/Paraguay ~14,000 MW
Biodiversity corridors,
CO₂ emissions from
reservoir
Model for transboundary
cooperation
Hoover Dam USA ~2,080 MW
Altered river ecology,
reduced sediment
downstream
Iconic but with long-term
ecological consequences
Aswan High Dam Egypt ~2,100 MW
Reduced Nile sediment,
salinization, fisheries
decline
Historical precedent for
Nile basin management
How GERD Compares to Other Major Global Dams
GERD stands out for its strategic location in the tropics, which may enhance local humidity and vegetation growth. Unlike
others, it’s not designed for irrigation, which reduces some ecological risks but limits multipurpose benefits2.
The Renaissance Dam's significant contribution to soil and water conservation, how much soil
was removed each year? How much water does the Nile River overflow each year?
Metric Estimate
Mean annual soil loss (BNR basin) ~1,373 million tonnes (1992–2020)
Soil erosion at GERD river mouth ~320 million tonnes/year
Annual sediment yield ~141 million tonnes/year
Annual Nile flow at Aswan ~80–90 billion cubic meters/year (avg ~88 BCM)
Takeaway
•Soil removal: The BNR basin experiences massive soil loss—over a billion tonnes annually—
partly due to erosion upstream, with GERD itself contributing to sediment trapping.
•Nile overflow: The river delivers between 80 to 90 billion cubic meters per year
downstream, as measured at Aswan.

latest reports from 2025. Here's a fact-checked breakdown:
Verified and Accurate Information
Item Notes
Date of Commencement
Construction officially began in April 2011, not March 2003. The 2003
date may refer to early planning or feasibility studies.
Electromechanical Work
The primary contractors were Voith Hydro (Germany) and Weir Group
(UK), not "Federal Power Corporation".
Dam Area
The reservoir covers ~1,875 square kilometers, not 1,680 square
meters.
Dam Water Storage Length The reservoir stretches ~246 km, which is accurate.
Construction Progress
As of September 2025, GERD has reached 100% completion, not
78.3%.
Public Pledges and Funding
Ethiopia raised over 8 billion birr through public contributions, but the
total pledge amount and final collection figures vary across reports.
