Mushroom Research in India started in 60s in the states of Himanchal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir and remained confined to these states with focus on White Button Mushroom . Later, a National Seminar on research , production , processing and marketing of mushroom was organized by the ICAR on January 21-22 , 1979 which was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister Shri. Morarji Desai and presided over by Shri. Surjit Singh Barnala the then Union Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation. During this seminar it was recommended to establish a National Research Centre on Mushroom and to strengthen mushroom research under coordinated programmes . As a result National Centre for Mushroom Research and Training (NCMRT) as well as All India Coordinated Mushroom Improvements Projects (AICMIP) was sanctioned in VI th Five Year Plan . NCMRT became operational at Chambaghat , Solan in June , 1983 .
