About This Presentation

Food chain is a process of transferring energy.

Slide Content

Good Morning Class!

OBJECTIVES: Describe how energy transfer happens in a food chain. 2. Construct a food chain using a given ecosystem. 3. Cite the importance of food chain in sustaining the life mechanism of all organisms.

Word Treasure Box

Word Treasure Box Trophic Level- a step in a food chain Consumers - organisms that eat other organisms Producers - organisms that can make their food Decomposers- organisms that break down organic matter Ecosystem- the community of organisms and their physical environment

“What’s in a Chain?”

Activity #4.6 “What’s in a Chain” Objectives: Describe a food chain. Construct a food chain in a given ecosystem. Identify the organisms in the constructed food chain.

Procedures: Get pictures of organisms from your teacher. Arrange the pictures of organisms based on their positions in the food chain. Put an arrow after each picture of organisms to indicate the feeding process. Label the name of the organism.

Rice Field Ecosystem

Forest Ecosystem

Backyard Ecosystem

Guide questions: What does the plant produce? If tertiary consumers die, what will mushrooms do to dead body of tertiary consumers/ 3 rd eaters? How is food related to energy transfer?

Analytic Rubrics Criteria 5 4 3 2 Correctness   Students have correctly placed all the organisms based on their positions in the food chain. Students have correctly placed most of the organisms based on their positions in the food chain. Students have correctly placed some of the organisms based on their positions in the food chain. Students have correctly placed few of the organisms based on their positions in the food chain. Teamwork All of the members of the group actively cooperate in the activity. Most of the members of the group cooperate in the activity. Some of the members cooperate but the others did not. Few members only of the group cooperate in the activity. Promptness Students finished the activity before the required time. Students finished the activity on the required time. Students finished the activity 2 min. after the required time. Students finished the activity 5 min. after the required time. Neatness All the materials used are clearly organized. It is neatly presented. Most of the materials used are clearly organized but some written words presented are ambiguous. Few of the materials used are not clearly organized. The presentation of the materials is confusing and unclear.

A series of feeding process wherein energy is transferred from the producers to the consumers

What if the tertiary consumers die , where do you think their dead materials/ bodies go?

Decomposers

What is the importance of fungi?

The grass will be eaten by the grasshopper and it will be eaten by the frog and it will be eaten by the python and python will be eaten by the eagle.

The grass will be eaten by the rat which is the primary consumer and it will be eaten by a snake which is the secondary consumer and it will be eaten by the eagle which is the tertiary consumer and if the hawk dies, decomposers will break down its dead materials.

sun corn rat owl The energy from the sun will be transferred to the corn which is the producer then will be eaten by the rat then rat will be eaten by the hawk.

During summer, grasses in a grassland ecosystem may dry up and die due to extreme heat. How will this affects the food chain on this ecosystem?

IT’S QUIZ TIME !!!

Construct a food chain in an ocean ecosystem, using the following organisms:   2. Cite the importance of food chain in sustaining the life mechanism of all organisms. Shark, green algae, fungi, herbivorous fish

Green herbivorous algae fish shark fungi Key to correction: 1.

2. Essay (5 points) Food chain is important since it shows a link between organisms in the environment through the transfer of energy from one organism to another through the eating/ feeding process that takes place among them. Food chain is important because it illustrates how organisms can survive in the environment by depending from other organisms.

Assignment: Cut pictures of organisms in marine ecosystem and construct a food chain. What is a food web? What is the difference between food chain and food web?
