NATIONAL SYMBOL The flag of Federal Republic of Nigeria was designed in 1959 by Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi and first officially hoisted on 1 October 1960. Nigeria flag consists of green and white colors that divide the flag vertically. While the green color on the fluctuating side of the flag symbolizes the agricultural lands and the green nature of the country's economically backbone, the white color in the center represents peace and unity. The Coat of Arms was created and adopted in May 1960. It consists of the images that express different meanings: Black shield and colorful wreath over the shield stand for fertile soil of Nigeria; White horses mean dignity; Red Eagle is for the strength of the nation; White lines in the “Y” shape stand for two main rivers of Nigeria: Benue and Niger; Yellow Trumpet or Costus Spectabilis is the national flower of Nigeria. The flower is placed on the ground where the shield is standing. It represents the beauty of the country and its nation; “Unity and Faith, Peace and Progress” line beneath the shield is the Nigerian national motto. It was adopted in 1978. The purpose is to inspire the nation to be united, faithful, live in peace and grow, become wiser and stronger.
HISTORY OF NIGERIA Nigeria was ruled by the United Kingdom from the mid-nineteenth century until 1960 when Nigeria achieved independence. British influence in the region began with the prohibition of slave trade to British subjects in 1807. Britain annexed Lagos in 1861 and established the Oil River Protectorate in 1884. Modern Nigeria dates from 1914, when the British Protectorates of Northern and Southern Nigeria were joined. The country became independent on October 1, 1960, and in 1963 adopted a republican constitution but elected to stay a member of the Commonwealth. The military dictatorship in Nigeria was a period when members of the Nigerian Armed Forces seized power in Nigeria from 1966 to 1999 with an interregnum from 1979 to 1983. The military was able to rise to power often Democracy Day is 12 June, a national public (bank) holiday in Nigeria. Until 6 June 2018, it was held annually on May 29. Democracy Day marks the day the military handed over power to an elected civilian government in 1999, marking the beginning of the longest continuous civilian rule since Nigeria's independence from colonial rule in 1960. It is a tradition that has been held annually, beginning in year 2000. June 12 was formerly known as Abiola Day, celebrated in Lagos, Nigeria and some south western states of Nigeria. with the tacit support of the elite through coup d'ètats. Since the country became a republic in 1963, there has been a series of military coups in Nigeria.
OUR CULTURE Nigeria is a very ethnically diverse country with over 370 ethnic groups and over 500 languages. There are 3 major ethnic groups. Yoruba tribe, Igbo tribe and Hausa tribe. The Eyo festival is one of the most famous indigenous festival in Nigeria by the Yoruba tribe. It is celebrated in Lagos, Nigeria, by the indigenes, who are also known as Isale Eko. It is usually celebrated in the month of May, and features a colourful traditional masquerade display and various manifestations of the local dance arts.
The Nigeria Currency The naira was introduced in 1973, when the country decimalized its monetary system and substituted the naira for the Nigerian pound The Central Bank of Nigeria has the sole authority to issue banknotes and coins. Banknotes are denominated in values from 5 to 500 naira. Coin denominations range from 1/2 kobo to 1 naira.
MAP OF NIGERIA Nigeria consists of 36 states and a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nigeria has a total landmass of approximately 923,768km 2 Abuja serves as the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria. Lagos State formerly served as the Federal Capital Territory about 20 years ago between 1914 to 1991. There are 6 geo-political zones in Nigeria. There a two major Rivers in Nigeria namely River Niger and River Benue. These Rivers meet at Lokoja in Kogi State, popularly known as The Confluence State.
ECONOMY OF NIGERIA Nigeria has a total population of about 233 million. The Gross Domestic Product of nigeria is about 432.3 billion USD. Nigeria is one of the largest exporter of crude-oil in the Western part of Africa. The oil sector provides for 95% of Nigeria's foreign exchange earnings and 80% of its budgetary revenues. Lagos is the economic and financial capital of Nigeria. With a population of over 14 million people, Lagos is currently the second most populous city in Africa. It is estimated to be the fastest growing city in Africa. The major Ports include; Lagos Port Complex and Tin Can Island Port Complex both in Lagos State. The Calabar Port Complex in Cross River State. The Delta Ports in Warri, Delta State and the Rivers Port Complex and Onne Port Complex both in Rivers State. Other sectors through which Nigeria makes income are agriculture, forestry, fishing, tourism.
TOURISM Tourism in Nigeria centers largely on events, due to the country's ample amount of ethnic groups, but also includes rain forests, savannah, waterfalls, and other natural attractions. Abuja is home to several parks and green areas with the largest one being Millennium Park. Millennium Park was designed by architect Manfredi Nicoletti and was officially opened by the United Kingdom's Elizabeth II in December 2003. Obudu Mountain Resort is a ranch and resort on the Obudu Plateau in Cross River State. It was developed in 1951 by M. McCaughley, a Scot who first explored the mountain ranges in 1949. He camped on the mountaintop of the Oshie Ridge on the Sankwala Mountains for a month before returning with Mr. Hugh Jones a fellow rancher in 1951. Together with Dr Crawfeild, they developed the Obudu Cattle Ranch. There are other beautiful places we would have loved to take you to but time will no permit us.
