Introduction The presentation presents view on Line and Staff Functions . The purpose of the presentation is providing critical evaluation on the usefulness of Line and Staff Functions within an organisation. The presentation explains advantages and disadvantages of Line and Staff Functions within an organisation.
Line and Staff Functions Line and Staff functions indicates the distribution patterns of authority within an organisation. In an organisation, authority is the position given based on the power for exercising and making decisions that affect others. In an organisation, ‘line’ and ‘staff’ refer to specific position or role involved in achieving key objectives. The managers and employees are part of each line groups where the role of employees is to follow the directives of the managers. Whereas, the staff functions are those that indirectly supports line personnel.
Line and Staff Functions Line Positions ----- Staff Functions
Line Positions Line positions in an organisation are those that have direct responsibility for achieving major goals and objectives of the corporation. These goals and objectives are directed for the generation of profits and revenues. Because of the producing and selling importance, the managers of the organisations referring as line positions are responsible for taking rightful ‘decisions’ within the organisation. Line personnel are directly involved in performing daily operations of the business.
Staff Functions Staff functions in an organisation are those that provides direct assistance as well as specialised expertise to the line positions. Staff functions mainly includes human resources, legal, accounting, legal, and public relations. Staff functions are also known as support people. Staff functions are not directly involved in performing daily operations of the business.
Advantages of Line and Staff Functions Key decision makers of the organisations are well-informed and properly organised. It provides line positions with expertise and assistance from staff personnel. Better coordination among all personnel. Proper and practical decisions. Work spilt amongst the line and staff personnel for better managerial specialisation.
Disadvantages of Line and Staff Functions Higher changes of conflicts in line and staff personnel. Lack of responsibility for official staffs as they are not accountable operations of the organisation. High cost involved as large number of specialists are required to appoint. Changes of overlapping are higher that can create disorder and confusion within employees.
Conclusion Overall, it can be concluded from the presentation that Line and Staff Functions within organisations provides expertise and assistance for improving organisation’s profitability. However, conflict management can be one of the major disadvantages that organisations are required to understand and work to eliminate.
