on5June;engaginggovernments,businesses,celebritiesandcitizens
tofocustheireffortsonapressingenvironmentalissue
THEME OF 2020
In2020,thethemeisbiodiversity–aconcernthatisbothurgentand
existential.Recentevents,frombushfiresinBrazil,theUnitedStates
andAustraliatolocustinfestationsacrossEastAfrica–andnow,a
globaldiseasepandemic–demonstratetheinterdependenceofhumans
andthewebsoflifeinwhichtheyexist.Natureissendingusa
message.

THE COMMUNITY
Aboveall,WorldEnvironmentDayoffersaglobalplatformforinspiring
positivechange.Itrecognizesthatglobalchangerequiresaglobal
community.Itpushesforindividualstothinkaboutthewaytheyconsume;
forbusinessestodevelopgreenermodels;forfarmersandmanufacturersto
producemoresustainably;forgovernmentstosafeguardwildspaces;for
educatorstoinspirestudentstoliveinharmonyfiercegatekeepersofagreen
future.Itrequiresallofus.withtheEarth;andforyouthtobecome
HISTORY
WorldEnvironmentDay[WED]wasestablishedbytheUNGeneralassembly
in1972onthefirstdayoftheStockholmConferenceintheHuman
Environment,resultingfromdiscussionsontheintegrationofhuman
interactionsandtheenvironment.Twoyearslater,in1974thefirstWEDwas
heldwiththetheme"OnlyOneEarth".EventhoughWEDcelebrationhave
beenheldannuallysince1974,in1987theideaforrotatingthecenterofthese
activitiesthroughselectingdifferenthostcountriesbegan.

BIODIVERSITY
BiodiversityisthevariationofEarth’sterrestrial,freshwater,andmarine
species,aswellastheirhabitats.Biodiversityisvitaltothesurvivalofall
lifeonearthandisalsothecornerstoneforthegoodsandservicesofthe
environmentthatallowhumansocietiestothrive.Biodiversityprovidesus
withfood,waterandresourcesaswellasservicessuchasclimatecontrol,
pollination,floodmitigationandcyclingofnutrients
Ecosystemsarerelyingonallpartsfromthesmallestbacteriatothelargest
vertebrate.It’sallinterconnected.Someareproducingoxygenthatothersare
breathing.Someprovidefoodforlargerspecies,whichinturnbecomepreyto
evenlargerspecies.Everylivingorganismhasaroletoplayinthe
maintenanceofbalance.
Youcanultimatelylosemuchmorethanonespeciesbyremovingone
element.Morethan98%ofthespeciesinnatureareextinct.

Airpollutionreferstothereleaseofpollutantsintotheairthatare

OVER POPULATION
Aswitheveryenvironmentalproblem,whiletherearemanysolutionsto

makesthosesolutionslesseffective.Whilerichcountriesproduce
moreplasticwasteperperson,forinstance,poorregionswherepopulation
growthoutstripstheinfrastructuretodisposeofwastemaycontribute
moreplasticoverall.

DEFORESTAION
Thedeforestationcausesinclude
manyfactors.Thedestructionof
theforestsisoccurringdueto
variousreasons,oneofthemain
reasonsbeingtheshort-term
economicbenefits.Corruptionat
thegovernmentinstitutions,
wealthandpowerdueto
harvestingoftherichesofthe
forest,populationgrowthand
urbanizationaresomeofthe
commoncauses.

CLIMATE CHANGE
Climatechange,alsocalledglobalwarming,referstothe
riseinaveragesurfacetemperaturesonEarth.An
overwhelmingscientificconsensusmaintainsthatclimate
changeisdueprimarilytothehumanuseoffossilfuels,
whichreleasescarbondioxideandothergreenhousegases
intotheair.Thegasestrapheatwithintheatmosphere,
whichcanhavearangeofeffectsonecosystems,including
risingsealevels,severeweatherevents,anddroughtsthat
renderlandscapesmoresusceptibletowildfires
