Differentiates Kinds of Variables and their Uses LESSON 3

WHAT IS VARIABLE?

VARIABLE - Is derived from the root word “vary.” are elements, entities, or factors that can change (vary); for example, the outdoor temperature, the cost of gasoline per gallon, a person’s weight, and the mood of persons in your extended family are all variables. In other words, they can have different values under different conditions or for different people.

Example of VARIABLE the outdoor temperature the cost of gasoline per gallon a person’s weight the mood of persons in your extended family. In other words, they can have different values under different conditions or for different people.

Classification of variables Independent variable Dependent variable

INDEPENDENT VARIABLE CAUSE MANIPULATED OR CONTROLLED DEPENDENT VARIABLE EFFECT OBSERVED AND MEASURED

A housewife wanted to know which soil is best for her pechay plants: the soil purchased from an online seller, soil from her backyard compost or the soil underneath the nearby bamboo tree. She planted 30 pechay seeds into each soil source and then compared the growth of pechay after a month. Independent variable: ______________________________________ Dependent variable: _______________________________________ Extraneous variable: _______________________________________

EXTRANEOUS VARIABLE Outside factors that may affect the result of the experiment

CONFOUNDING VARIABLE Result was affected

The variables can also be classified according to their nature. I. Quantitative Variables , also called numerical variables A. Discrete variables are countable whole numbers. B. Continuous variables take fractional (non-whole number) values that can either be a positive or a negative Intervals – no true zero value/ zero value doesn't exist Ratio – with true zero value II. Qualitative Variables also referred to as Categorical Variables A. Nominal variable simply defines groups of subjects B. Ordinal variable , from the name itself, denotes that a variable is ranked in a certain order. Dichotomous variable - consists of only two distinct categories
