COORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS - coordinate or join two or more sentences, main clauses or words which are of the same syntactic importance. F or A n d N or B ut O r Y et S o Note: a conjunction of this type is placed between the items that it links together.

COORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS FOR -shows reason or purpose - use to explain the ‘why’ in a situation Example: Everyone thought he would lose for he was sick.

Example/s She needs to be home for her kids. I am trying to find a job for I am unemployed

AND -connects two or more ideas with the same rank - used when two similar clauses or points are made Example: I took the exam and waited for the result. COORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS

Example/s The taxi stopped at the train station and two men got out of it. Miriam bought apples, oranges, carrots, lemons and potatoes from the market.

NOR -shows a non-contrasting, negative idea - generally used after a neither (-neither, -nor) Example: He is neither tall, nor fat. COORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS

Example/s My sister doesn’t like to study, nor does she take notes in class. The problem is, you neither asked nor listened.

BUT -generally used to show a contrast between two clauses Example: I like living in the city but my brother prefers living in the country. COORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS

Example/s The stick was thin but it was strong. I want to travel abroad, but there are so many protocols that I need to consider.

OR -connects two choices; used to suggest an option or alternative Example: We can eat chicken or pork for dinner. COORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS

Example/s You are going to have a little brother or sister. We could go to a zoo or we could go to a theme park.

YET -used to show a contrast in spite of something Example: John studied a lot, yet he didn’t pass the test. COORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS

Example/s He says nice words, yet you don’t trust him. It was raining, yet we went on a walk.

SO -shows consequences or result of something Example: My daughter is very kind, so everybody likes her. COORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS

Example/s I’ve just eaten dinner, so I’m not hungry. Her clothes were dirty, so she washed them.

NOTE: - coordinating conjunctions are the simplest of all the conjunctions to recognize and master. - knowing how they work will improve the quality and complexity of your writing. COORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS
