Ready-to-Cook (RTC) and Ready-to-Eat (RTE) foods represent two distinct categories within the convenience food market, offering consumers convenient and time-saving options for meal preparation and consumption.
RTC foods consist of partially prepared ingredients or meal components that require minimal additional preparation before cooking. These products often include pre-packaged mixes, marinated meats, pre-cut vegetables, spice blends, instant premixes, noodle and pasta kits, streamlining the cooking process and reducing overall meal preparation time. RTC foods provide consumers with the flexibility to customize their meals while enjoying the convenience of pre-prepared ingredients.
On the other hand, RTE foods are fully prepared and require no further cooking or preparation before consumption. These products are ready to eat straight from the packaging and often include items like pre-cooked meals, snacks, salads, and desserts. RTE foods cater to individuals with busy lifestyles who prioritize convenience and seek quick and hassle-free meal solutions.
India's position as the second-largest global food producer, after China, has attracted a diverse array of international food companies. The RTC and RTE segments have played a significant role in shaping India's food industry, offering a variety of products that align with changing consumer behaviors driven by rising incomes and hectic lifestyles.
The RTE/RTC food sector in India has displayed remarkable growth, with RTE products experiencing a CAGR of 12% and RTC products at 7% over the past decade. Projections indicate that production in India will reach approximately ₹9,600 Crores or 4.6 Lac Metric Tons by the fiscal year 2030, reflecting an impressive CAGR of approximately 13%. Young consumers, particularly millennials, accounting for around 34% of the total population, significantly influence the RTE/RTC market, driven by their preference for convenient and quick meal solutions.
Interestingly, while the domestic market for RTE food products is robust, there is substantial global demand for Indian RTE products. This global appeal positions the sector for significant growth and investment opportunities, making it one of the most promising segments within the broader food processing industry.
