PROJECT LACER (A LEAP FOR ACHIEVING COMPREHENSION USING ENGAGING READING MATERIALS) : AN INNOVATION IN IMPROVING THE COMPREHENSION SKILLS OF GRADE 6 LEARNERS OF ALINGUIGAN 3RD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

RATIONALE Literacy is the foundation for individual and social growth in today's rapidly changing educational world. Reading proficiency is not only an essential skill, but it also opens the door to intellectual empowerment, critical thinking, and lifelong learning.

RATIONALE According to the Revised Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI), some learners in Alinguigan 3rd are having difficulty reaching the competency requirement for becoming proficient readers in recent years. The researchers will acquire the abilities needed to clearly and effectively discuss diverse issues and possibilities within the framework of reading by combining abstract ideas and practical activities.

RATIONALE Phil-IRI Group Screening Test (GST) results in English show that 1% scored 14 and above. In addition, Phil-IRI Pre-test result reveals that out of 21 pupils tested, 1 or only 4% of the pupils were identified as independent readers; 9 or only 42.85% were instructional readers and 11 or 52.38% were frustrated readers.

RATIONALE It is for this reason that this study was conceptualized to upgrade the reading skills of learners using an intervention called Project LACER . The said intervention will intended to meet learner’s different needs, guaranteeing inclusion and individualized support for each child. Project LACER seeks to improve young learners' reading abilities, comprehension, and critical thinking by combining evidence-based methods, creative strategies, and involvement from the community. Through these tests, the researchers aim to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the learners' reading skills.

ACTION RESEARCH QUESTION 1. What are the Pre/Post test results of the respondents after the Project LACER? 2. Is there a significant difference in the Pre/Post test results of the respondents after Project LACER?

ACTION RESEARCH QUESTION 3. What is the effect size of the difference in the Pre/Post test of the pupils in the implementation of Project LACER? 4. What are the challenges and experiences encountered during the implementation of Project LACER?

INTERVENTION

ACTION RESEARCH METHOD This study is a mixed quali-quanti research design. On the quantitative, the researcher will utilize quasi-experiment research. Meanwhile, phenomenology will be used to describe learners challenges/experiences in the conduct of the intervention.

A. PARTICIPANTS AND/OR OTHER SOURCES OF DATA AND INFORMATION The respondents of this study are the 21 Grade 6 learners of Alinguigan 3rd for School year 2023-2024. The respondents will be fragmented into two groups the control group and experimental group. The control group is comprised of 10 learners drawn from the 21 Grade 6 learners while the 11 remaining number of participants from the same Grade level will be deemed as experimental group for this study.

B. DATA GATHERING METHODS The proponent will ask for the consent of the parents to allow their children to be the respondents of the aforesaid study through PTA meeting and dissemination of the consent form.

B. DATA GATHERING METHODS The proponent will employ pre-test and post-test assessments as essential tools for data collection in this study.

DATA ANALYSIS PLAN 1. Mean as Standard Deviation to compute the mean score of the Pre test and Post test scores. 2. Paired sample t-test to test the significant difference of the Pre test and Post test scores. 3. Cohens D to determine the effect size of the intervention.
