S-V Game: “Which Is Right? S-V game.pptx

What are the properties of a well-written text?

Grammar Rules General rule: The verb agrees with the subject in person and in number. e.g. Billy submits his project on time. S S The students submit their project on time. P P I submit my project on time. S P You submit your project on time. S P

Indefinite Pronouns Indefinite pronouns like each , everyone , everybody , one , no one, nobody , anyone , someone , somebody , many a , either , neither , something , nothing , anything , other , and another require singular verbs. e.g. Nobody attends the flag ceremony. S S

Indefinite… Indefinite pronouns like several, few, many and both require plural verbs. e.g. Many join the writing contest. P P

Collective Nouns If the collective noun, such as family , class , community , etc. is considered as a unit or a group, it takes a singular verb. If it is thought of as comprising individuals, it takes a plural verb. e.g. The family rides the van on its trip to Bulusan Lake. S S The committee argue on ways to help battered P P wives and abused children.

Compound Subjects A compound subject joined by and calls for a plural verb ; however if the compound subject refers to the same person or the same object, or the compound subject functions as a unit, the verb is singular . e.g. The secretary and treasurer reads the S S minutes of the meeting. The secretary and the treasurer read the P P minutes of the meeting.

Compound… If the words in the compound subjects joined by or, neither-nor, and either-or are singular, the verb is singular . But if the words in the compound subject differ in number , the verb agrees with the subject nearest it . e.g. The father or the mother wields authority in the S S family household. Either Grandmother or my elderly aunts act as P P family surrogates during my parents’ absence.

Expressions of fraction, percentages, periods of time, measurements, etc. Expressions of fractions , percentages , periods of time , measurements and sums of money are usually singular. However when these expressions are followed by a modifier with a mass-noun object, the verb is singular; when the modifier consists of a count-noun object, the verb is plural. e.g. Two-thirds of the rice is reserved for the indigent families. S S Two thousand pesos is all that the distraught S S mother requests for her son’s medical treatment.
