This carbonation process of melt mainly having two distinct steps. The first step is the formation of a voluminous and gelatinous precipitate by reaction of calcium and CO2 and second step involves the conditioning of the precipitate in order to improve its filter-ability. Ca (OH) 2  + CO 2  = CaCO 3  + H 2 O INTRODUCTION

INTRODUCTION Carbonatation has been used in raw sugar factories to obtain a second high quality sugar product from the lower purity liquors. The general chemical reaction is quite simple and occurs in the following steps: High molecular weight sugars are ionizable and exist largely as a colloid in water. The reaction of sugar with lime causes precipitation of some sugar on the lime, and this is the principal reaction which decolorization accomplishes. The lime also reacts with anions, particularly sulfate, to form various insoluble salts. This lime treatment generally raises the pH level at which carbonatation will be started, and this presents a further problem of conditioning to lower pH to get proper results on the carbonation process.
