PLOT OVERVIEW S hutter Island is a 2010 American psychological thriller film directed by Martin Scorsese, Based on Dennis Lehan's 2003 novel of the same name. Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Deputy U.S. Marshal Edward "Teddy" Daniels. Mark Ruffalo plays his partner and fellow deputy marshal. The film begins in 1954 with two U.S. Marshals, Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his partner Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) traveling to a psychiatric hospital on Shutter Island in Boston Harbor to investigate the disappearance of one of the patients, Rachel Solando . Teddy believes his wife's killer is on the island . Teddy's “partner” is a doctor at the hospital, and the whole investigation was an experiment to help treat his PTSD, dissociative identity disorder and Schizophrenia. This film explores a variety of illnesses, psychological approaches and therapies. TEDDY DANIELS Teddy Daniels is someone Laeddis created so he could be good. He wanted to believe that Andrew Laeddis was a different person. Teddy Daniels claims to be an investigator at Ashecliffe Mental Institution located on Shutter Island.He served in World War II. He seems to be highly intelligent and healthy. He has delusions in which he believes patient number 67 is being kept a secret. The delusions convince him that the patient is Andrew Laeddis who killed his wife. Teddy feels like everyone in the institution is purposely attempting to keep him as a patient. Teddy finally realizes that he is the lost patient, Andrew Laeddis . The most violent patient on Shutter Island.
Andrew Laeddis Andrew Laeddis is the main character of this movie. He was actually the 67th patient of Ashecliffe Hospital. Andrew killed his wife and just because he couldn’t live with that, he made an alternate personality of himself. Andrew Laeddis had Multiple personality disorder and Schizophrenia. The hospital’s objective was to cure Laeddis through cognitive behavioral therapy.
Chuck Aule / Dr Lester Sheehan Chuck was unknown to Teddy before the movie begins, he claimed to be a US Marshal. Chuck looks to be on Teddy's side and has his back throughout the film, but he is telling Dr Cawley everything Teddy has revealed Chuck was a soft-spoken person which helped him to gain trust of Teddy. Chuck's duty was to keep an eye on Teddy throughout, and it turns out that he is also his doctor.
Dr Cawley Dr. Cawley is Chief of Staff at Shutter Island Secretly using threatening experimental techniques on patients master in assessing whether or not a patient is psychotic emotionless
DOLORES CHANEL Dolores was Andrew's wife. She killed all 3 of their children and then asked Andrew to set her free and then Andrew shot her. She was suffering from bipolar disorder. She appeared in Andrew's hallucinations.

Conclusions Teddy is not a real person but a delusion created by inmate Andrew Laeddis. The ending reveals that DiCaprio's character is a patient himself. The reason behind him to be admitted here was he murdered his wife (Michelle Williams) because she went insane and killed their children.
