Overview
Pus is a thick fluid containing
dead tissue, cells (WBC), and
bacteria.
Depending on the location and
type of infection, pus can be
many colors, including white,
yellow, green, and brown.
While it sometimes has a foul
smell, it can also be odorless.

Color and smell
The whitish-yellow, yellow, yellow-brown, and greenishcolor of pus is
the result of an accumulation of dead neutrophils.
Pus can sometimes be greenbecause some white blood cells produce a
green antibacterial protein called myeloperoxidase.
Pseudomonas aeruginosa producesa greenpigment called
pyocyanin.
Pus from infections caused byP. aeruginosais particularly foul-smelling.
If blood gets into the affected area, the yellowish or greenish color may
also have tinges of red.

Pathophysiology of pus formation
When the body detects an infection, it sends neutrophils, to
destroy the fungi or bacteria.
During this process, some of the neutrophils and tissue
surrounding the infected area will die. Pus will accumulate as
the dead material.
Many types of infection can cause pus. Infections involving the
bacteria
Staphylococcus aureus
Streptococcuspyogenesare especially prone to pus.
Both of these bacteria release toxins that damage tissue, creating
pus.
