MUSIC OF INDONESIA
Lesson Objectives: Identify the instrumenta l music of Indonesia. Classify the different musical instruments in Indonesian ensemble . Explores ways of producing sounds on the variety of sources that would stimulate instruments being studied.
GAMELAN
GAMELAN - The word gamelan means “ orchestra”. This orchestra comprises up to seventy-five members. - The ensemble composed of various percussion instruments (gongs, drums, fiddles), bamboo flutes , and some chordophones .
GAMELAN - It is considered sacred , therefore stepping over the instrument is a sign of disrespect . - Musicians bow before playing the instruments to show respect . - They also believed that it possess supernatural powers .
Types of Gamelan Balinese Gamelan – used for sacred music. P lays music in the Hindu temple as an offering to their Gods. Javanese Gamelan – used for court music. Plays music to accompany dances, songs, and puppetry ( Wayang Kulit ).
Instruments in Gamelan 1. Sarons – these are xylophones with 5 – 9 keys each. The keys are hit with a wooden mallet called tabuh .
Types of Sarons a. Saron Demung – is the largest and plays the melody. b. Saron Barung – is an octave higher than demung . c. Saron Panerus – also plays the melody but doubles the note and creates syncopation. d. Saron Slentem – plays an octave lower than the demung .
Instruments in Gamelan 2. Gambang – is a xylophone with 21 keys made from wood. This is usually combined with the sarons .
Instruments in Gamelan 3 . Gong Ageng – is a huge suspended gong that marks every repetition of the fixed melody.
Instruments in Gamelan 4. Kempul – is a suspended definite-pitched gong that sounds an octave higher than the gong ageng .
Instruments in Gamelan 5 . Kenong – hanging in a horizontal box, looks like a kettle that sounds an octave higher. ( Ketuk and kempyang )
Instruments in Gamelan 6 . Genders – are metallophones with keys made of bronze. These are played using a pair of padded mallets.
Types of Genders a. Gender Panerus – is the highest-pitched among the genders. b. Gender Barung – is an octave lower than the gender panerus . c. Gender Demung – is even lower that plays the main theme . d. Gender Slentem – is the lowest in the family of genders.
Instruments in Gamelan 7 . Bonangs – are arranged according to pitch from highest to lowest – bonang panerus , bonang barung and bonang panembung .
Instruments in Gamelan 8 . Rebab – is a bowed instrument that resembles a violin but with only two strings and a heart-shape resonator.
Instruments in Gamelan 9 . Suling – is an end-blown flute that sometimes include in gamelan ensemble to play ornamentation for the main theme.
Instruments in Gamelan 10. Angklung – a set of instruments made of bamboo, carved to achieve a tune in an octave. It is played by shaking it sideways.

Lesson Objectives: Identify the instrumenta l music of Cambodia. Classify the different musical instruments in C ambodian ensemble . Explores ways of producing sounds on the variety of sources that would stimulate instruments being studied.
PIN PEAT
PIN PEAT - is a Cambodian musical ensemble or an orchestra that usually accompanies ceremonial music of the royal courts and temples . - This is also used to accompany masked plays , shadow plays , and religious ceremonies .
MUSIC OF THAILAND
Lesson Objectives: Identify the instrumenta l music of Thailand. Classify the different musical instruments in Thai ensemble . Explores ways of producing sounds on the variety of sources that would stimulate instruments being studied.
PIPHAT
PIPHAT - It is an instrumental ensemble used in the classical music of Thailand. It features wind and percussion instrument. - This is used to accompany Buddhist ceremonies , masked dance-drama ( khon ), classical dance ( lakhon ), and shadow puppet theatrical presentations .
Types of Piphat Piphat Mai Khaeng – a piphat performance in a loud outdoor style using hard mallets. Piphat Mai Nuam – a piphat performance in an indoor style using padded mallets.
Instruments in Piphat 1. Ranat – a traditional xylophone consists of 21-22 wooden bars suspended by cords over a boat-shaped resonator.
Instruments in Piphat 2. Pi – a woodwind instrument with a cylindrical bore and six finger holes.
Instruments in Piphat 3 . Klong – a double - headed cylindrical drum with a slightly flared shape in the middle resembling a barrel.
Instruments in Piphat 4 . Khong Wong Y ai – it has 16 tuned bossed gongs in a rattan frame and is played with two beaters.
Instruments in Piphat 5 . Khong Wong Lek – it has 18 tuned bossed gongs in a rattan frame and is smaller and higher in pitch than the khong wong yai .
KHRUENG SAI
KHRUENG SAI - It means “ string instrument” . It features different kind of string , wind and percussion instruments. - This ensemble is primarily used for indoor instrumental performances , accompanying the stick puppet theater of Thailand called hoon grabok .
Instruments in Khrueng Sai 1. Saw Duang – is a bowed two-stringed instrument played vertically on the lap.
2 . Saw U – is a Thai bowed two-stringed instrument that has a lower pitch than the saw duang . Instruments in Khrueng Sai
3. Jakhe – is a plucked string instrument with three strings and eleven wooden frets. Instruments in Khrueng Sai
MAHORI
MAHORI - It is a classical instrumental ensemble that combines the instrument from khrueng sai and piphat except the aerophone pi . - This is traditionally played by women in the courts . It is also used to accompany songs and plays .
MUSIC OF MYANMAR
Lesson Objectives: Identify the instrumenta l music of Myanmar. Classify the different musical instruments in Burmese ensemble . Explores ways of producing sounds on the variety of sources that would stimulate instruments being studied.
HSAING WAING
HSAING WAING - it is Myanmar’s traditional folk music ensemble. It is made up mainly of different gongs and drums as well as other loud-sounding instruments. - The performance are usually done in an open-air to accompany ceremonies and festivals .
Instruments in Hsaing Waing 1. Hne – a multiple reed oboe with a remarkable crooked form.

Instruments in Hsaing Waing 4 . Kyi Waing – small high-pitched set of bronze gongs in a circular frame.
Instruments in Hsaing Waing 5 . Maung Hsaing – large bronze gongs in a rectangular frame, tuned to a lower register than the kyi waing .
Classification of Burmese Musica l Instrument Kyei – are instruments that are made of brass or bronze Thay -ye – are instruments made from skin, hide, or leather. Kyo – are stringed instruments. Lei – are wind instruments. Let- ko – are clapper instruments. Patala – are xylophone instruments.
SAUNG GAUK - it is the national instrument ( 13-string angular harp with soft sound ) of Myanmar. - The body of the saung gauk is made of padauk , the famous Myanmar mahogany, the flat bar is made of cutch wood , it is covered with the leather of a female deer and the strings are made of silk .
