Al Thani Family Rulers Tree

S heikh M ohammed B in A l T hani (1850-1878)

Mohammed Bin Thani was born in Fuwairat . After the death of his father, he became the leader of his tribe. Al Thani family moved from Fuwairat to Doha in the middle of the 19 century under the leadership of Mohammed Bin Thani . His rule spread throughout Qatar. He even created a union with the Faisal Bin Turki , the Emir of Second Saudi state. Later, Emir Faisal paid a visit to Qatar in 1851 .

In 1861, Qatar signed a treaty with Britain, after which Qatar became an independent Emirate and Sheikh Mohammed was recognized as the ruler of Doha . In 1876, he retired due to old age and handed over the rule to his son Sheikh Jassim Mohammed Bin Thani . He died in 1878.

Sheikh Jassim bin M ohammad Al Thani (1878-1913)

He was born in 1825. In 1871, he sent an invitation behalf of his father to the representative of ottoman’s state, that Qatar welcomes a military power to protect the nascent nation from threats of Britain. In July 1871, he took the Ottoman garrison and raised the flag of Ottoman state in his palace and accepted from Ottoman state the title of Qa’em Maqam in 1871. In 1878, he took the rule of Qatar.

The Ottoman’s tried to control Qatar by Appointing Ottoman administrators all over Qatar. Creating customs office at Doha and strengthening their naval base. All these situations led to war between Sheik Jassim Mohammad Bin Thani and the Ottomans in March 1893 at Al Wajbah . Sheikh Jassim and his people beat the Ottomans.

In 1861, Qatar signed a treaty with Britain, after which Qatar became an independent Emirate and Sheikh Mohammed was recognized as the ruler of Doha. In 1876, he retired due to old age and handed over the rule to his son Sheikh Jassim Mohammed Bin Thani. He died in 1878.

Sheikh Abdullah Bin Jassim Al- Thani

He was born in Doha in 1880. On July 17,1913, he took over as the ruler of Qatar. It was the British and the Ottomans who acknowledged him as the ruler of Qatar. On November 3, 1916 , Britain signed a treaty with Sheikh Abdullah to bring Qatar under the British protection. According to this treaty, he could not create any relations with other foreign countries without the approval of Britain. Britain will in turn defend Qatar against enemies. Oil was discovered during his rule in Dukhan land field in 1940.

Sheikh Ali Bin Abdullah Al Thani (1949-1960)

On December31,1949, first oil shipment exported from Dukhan oil field to Mesaieed port. On S ep 1, 1952,an agreement was signed with Iraq petroleum company. Later it came to be known as Qatar Petroleum company.

He was concerned for knowledge. Under his rule, Systematic National schools and Dar Al Khotob National Library was opened and also the Ministry of Education was introduced in 1957. During his rule, Al Rumaila hospital was opened to provide free treatments for citizens and expats. He died on August 1, 1974.

Sheikh Ahmed Bin Ali Al Thani (1960-1972)

He was born in 1920 in Doha. On October 24,1960, he became the ruler of Doha. He established ministry of finance in 1960. Gulf countries began asking for independence from Britain. Britain began to withdraw their control over the Gulf states. Britain acknowledged the independence of Qatar on September 3, 1971. He died in November 1977. Sheikh Ahmed Bin Ali Al Thani (1960-1972)

He died in October 2016 .

He was born in Doha in 1952. He was the first Qatari to take over as the Commander in chief of Qatar Armed Forces. He was chosen as the crown prince in 1977. He became the emir of Qatar in in 1995. Under him the state of Qatar improved their relations with other GCC countries.

His highness , Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar 2013.

He was born on 3 June,1980. After his education, he was appointed as the apparent heir on 5 of August, 2003. He became the emir in June 2013.
