In the book Law, Liberty and
Morality, H.L.A. Hart writes, “Men
are neither angels nor devils; that
makes morality both necessary
and possible.”

IL CTE- Health Science & Technology
What does Hart mean?
What is morality?
Why would morality be both necessary
and possible?

IL CTE- Health Science & Technology
Morality
that which is regarded as right or wrong; a
collection of beliefs that constitute a good
life and fall under the branch of philosophy
called “ethics.”

IL CTE- Health Science & Technology
Types of Morality
Personal Morality
Group Morality
Codified Morality

IL CTE- Health Science & Technology
Personal Morality
defines and distinguishes among right and
wrong intentions, thoughts, or actions.
People often associate this with human
conscience.
The desire to conform to the behavior of a
group is a powerful force, but it may apply
more generally to cultural norms and customs.

IL CTE- Health Science & Technology
Group Morality
shared concepts and beliefs and is often
codified to regulate behavior within a
culture or a community.
Those who choose moral action are said to
have “moral fibre.”
Those who choose immoral behavior are
often labeled as socially degenerate.

IL CTE- Health Science & Technology
Codified Morality
generally distinguished from custom.
Another way for a community to define
appropriate activities
Such codes may be called laws but are
distinguished from legal or judicial right,
including civil rights.

IL CTE- Health Science & Technology
Moral Codes
complex statements of right and wrong.
A common version of a moral code is a legal code
that states the penalties or corrective actions
associated with a particular act.
Value systems involve prioritization of values held by
an individual or a group and can be used to form a
moral code.
The Ten Commandments of Judaism, Christianity,
and Islam and the Noble Eightfold Path of Buddhism
are examples.

IL CTE- Health Science & Technology
Moral Core
the extent to which the person will apply
his or her notions of morality.
Determines how an individual applies
particular moral values and beliefs formed by
experience, inhibitions, and concepts of
beauty throughout life

IL CTE- Health Science & Technology
Ethics
the branch of philosophy that attempts to
understand the nature of morality and
often refers to standards of behavior that
explain how human beings ought to act in
certain situations.
