Environmental Science Quarter 1 Module 1

Environmental Science It is the field of Science that studies the interactions of the physical, chemical, and biological components of the environment and also the relationships and effects of these components with the organisms in the environment.

Example: Relationship between living thing and non living thing like plant and soil.

It is an interdisciplinary academic field that integrates physical, biological and information sciences (including ecology, biology, physics, chemistry, zoology, mineralogy, oceanology, limnology, soil science, geology, atmospheric science, and geodesy)to the study of the environment, and the solution of environmental problems. Everything we see around us.

It deals with the study of processes in soil, water, air and organisms which lead to pollution or environmental damages and scientific basis for the establishment of a standard which can be considered acceptably clean, safe and healthy for human beings and natural ecosystems. Example: Soil with chemical, distilled water(acidic), humidifier(resp. prob.)

It concerns with the “Biosphere” which include all biotic parts of hydrosphere, lithosphere and atmosphere Environment consists of both biotic and biotic substances.

3 Goals of Envi Sci Learn how the natural world works To understand how we as humans interact with the environment Determine how we affect the environment.

Importance of Environmental Science The world around us is changing at a very rapid pace. Change can be beneficial but it can cause damage as well Example: Increase population; increase resource

1. Environment‟ is derived from the French word „_________________‟ which means to__________________. 2. ____________________ is the study of the moral relationship of human beings with the environment and its non-human contents. 3. The Atmosphere forms a distinctive protective layer about _______ thick around the earth. 4. Biological elements such as plants, animals, microorganisms and men constitute the ___________. 5. ___________________ an American ecologist, is considered to play a key role in the development of modern environmental ethics.
