About This Presentation

Communicative style

Slide Content

School PrayerSchool Prayer
Heavenly Father
Grant me each day the desire to do my best,
To grow mentally and morally as well as
physically,
To be kind and helpful to my classmates and
teachers,
To be honest with myself as well as with others,
Help me to be a good sport and smile when I
lose as well as when I win,
Teach me the value of true friendship,
Help me always to conduct myself so as to
bring credit to my school.
Amen!

Directions: Study the comic
strips below to identify the
difference among the types
of speech style.

From William
Shakespeare’s Julius
Caesar, Act III, Scene
II [Friends, Romans,
countrymen, lend me
your ears]
(Shakespeare 1623)
This famous
oratorical speech of
Mark Anthony was
performed before
ancient Greece
lawmakers and Greek
people during the
funeral of Julius
Caesar.

In this picture, the girl scouts solemnly pledged loyalty
during their investiture ceremony. They repeated the
pledge led by the Girl Scouts troop leader.

Question
Describe how the girl scout pledge
during the ceremony.
What did you observed in the speech
given by Julius Ceasar?
What communicative style is used in
speech and in the ceremony?

The way you
communicate has a big
impact on how you get
the things you want.

Good communication skills
can help you avoid conflict
and solve problems- they
are also important for
making friends and having
healthy relationships.

COMMUNICATIVE STYLE
It refers to a specific form
of language that a speaker
utilizes which is
characterized by a certain
level of formality and
informality.

What are the different
communicative style?
•INTIMATE
•CASUAL
•CONSULTATIVE
•FORMAL
•FROZEN

TYPES of COMMUNICATIVE
STYLE
•CASUAL/INFORMAL
This style is an informal communication between
groups and peers. It is used in conversation
between friends and insiders who have something
to share and have shared background information
but don’t have close relations. Jargon, slang or
the vernacular language are used.
More often than not, casual is your style of
speaking. You speak casually in your everyday
conversation with friends, phone calls or even
chats.

CASUAL/INFOMAL
•Relax and unconcerned
•We used it when we talk to
our friends and peers
•There is free and easy
participation from both the
speaker and listener

•Slang
--very informal language that

is
usually
spoken rather than

written,used especially by
particular groups of people:
Ex:

•ASAP: stands for ‘as soon as possible’
•B-Ball: often used to abbreviate basketball
Blow or Bomb: to fail or to be unsuccessful
Blue or Have the Blues: to feel depressed or
sad
•Bro: a friend, often used for a masculine
friend
•Buck: one dollar By the skin of your teeth: just
barely

•Vulgarities
the

quality
of not being
appropriate,
 simple,
or
 beautiful, or not in
the
 style preferred by rich or
well-
 educated people

•Colloquialism
•an
 informal word
or
 expression that is
more
 suitable for use
in
 speech than in writing

TYPES of COMMUNICATIVE
STYLE
•CONSULTATIVE
This style is used in semi-formal communication in a two-way
participation. The speaker does not usually plan what he/she
wants to say. This style is the most operational among others,
that’s why professional or mutually acceptable language is a
must in this style. It could be noted that sentences end to be
shorter and spontaneous.
Examples of situations where this style is used are
communication between teachers and students, employers and
employees, doctor and patient, judge and lawyer, expert and
apprentice, etc.

TYPES of COMMUNICATIVE
STYLE
•INTIMATE
This style is for very close relationships like couples,
family, and best friends. It is also used for self-
addressed questions or self-talk, etc. It is used in
private conversation between people who are very
close and know each other quite well because they
have the maximum of shared background
information.
Intimate style could also be seen in couple
talking about their future plans, family sharing
ideas, very close friends sharing secrets, etc.

TYPES of COMMUNICATIVE
STYLE
•FORMAL
In this speech style, the speaker avoids using slang
terminologies. What the speaker says is something that
has been prepared beforehand. Its complex sentence and
noun phrases are well structured, logically sequenced and
strongly coherent.
Formal speech style is used in situations like meetings,
speeches, school lessons, court proceeding, a corporate
meeting, at a swearing in ceremony, in an interview or in
a classroom.

TYPES of COMMUNICATIVE
STYLE
•FROZEN
It is the most formal communicative style that
is usually used during respectful events and
ceremonies. It is used generally in a very formal
setting. It uses fixed and static language.
Furthermore, it does not require any feedback
from the audience.
Other examples of frozen speech are national
pledge, anthem, school creeds, marriage
ceremonies, etc.

SUMMARY OF THE LESSON/
GENERALIZATION

rigid and has a set, agreed upon vocabulary that is well
documented; and is often of a standard variety.
_______________________7. Certain terms of endearment,
slangs or expressions whose meaning is shared with a
small subset of persons to person can be used.
_______________________8. Speaker of this style must
frame whole sentences ahead before they are delivered.
