Introduction R ecruitment refers to the process of searching suitable prospective employees for the organization and then to motivate them to apply for seeking a job in the organization. The process of recruitment starts with the issue of an advertisement about vacancies in the organization. This advertisement can be issued through print media, electronic media or an any other mode. The process of recruitment helps to keep unwanted and unsuitable candidates away from the organization. The process of recruitment serves as a very important link between the job-seekers and job-providers. 3

Factors affecting recruitment Size of organization: The number of employees to be in any organization depends upon the size of organization. More employees are recruited in large organization and vice versa. Employment conditions: Employment conditions are not good in developing countries. Due to poor health and educational standards of people, there are several problems in the selection of suitable employees. But, employment conditions are really good in developed countries. Salary structure: Every individual wants to have maximum earning. Hence if an organization pays higher salary and more allowances to the employees, it does not have any recruitment of suitable employees. Working conditions: Working conditions in the organization such as proper lighting, well ventilated buildings, security of employees and facilities provided to them, sanitation etc. also affect recruitment in organization. 5

Sources of recruitment 6 Internal sources: Internal sources of recruitment refer to the recruitment from within the organization. Under it, whenever there is a vacancy in the organization, the performance of the employees is evaluated and someone from amongst them is appointed to fill that vacancy. External sources: External sources of recruitment refer to recruitment from outside the organization. Under it, suitable employees are selected by carrying out recruitment from amongst the persons outside the organization.

Internal sources Transfer: Under transfer, an employee is shifted from his present post to some other post of the same level. With this, although the nature of his functions changes, yet there is no changes in his responsibility or remuneration etc. Promotion: The process of filling the higher level posts by shifting the lower level employees to higher level posts is known as promotion. Promotion is given to present on the basis of their seniority or efficiency 7

Internal sources Ex-Employees: Ex- employees of the organization are also considered an internal source of recruitment. It is possible that those employees, who had left the organization earlier, may be willing to join the organization the organization again. If such employees are efficient, they may be employed again. Extension of service: Retirement of employees creates vacancies in the organization. If it is not possible to fill these vacancies, then extension in service tenure may be granted to the retiring employees. This is also an internal source of recruitment. But, it is a costly method. 8

External sources Advertisement: It is the main external source of recruitment. In this process, advertisement about vacancies in the organization is given local, regional or national level newspapers or journal or through other media. Detailed information about vacancies is given and interested candidates evaluate their qualification and qualities with regard to the requirements and then apply for it. Employment Exchange: These are set up by the government. Unemployed people get themselves registered in such employment exchanges. Whenever there is a vacancy in the organization, it may be requested to help. It may give the list of registered unemployed persons to the organization. This creates a contact between the job providing organization and job seekers. 9

External sources Labour contractors: It also help organizations in the process of recruitment. They have a close contact with the labourers. Whenever, temporary employees are to be recruited in a short span of time, this method is highly appropriate. This method is generally used in the recruitment of unskilled employees. Internet based recruitment: Internet also plays an important role as a source of recruitment. At present, there are several such websites which exhibit the information about vacancies in the organization and job seekers. 10
