Air Pollution: Causes, Effects & Solutions Presented by: priya mishra R R Educational Trust B.Ed College Understanding the impact on health and the environment

What is Air Pollution? Air pollution refers to the presence of harmful or excessive substances in the atmosphere. Pollutants can be natural (volcanic eruptions, dust storms) or man-made (industrial, vehicular emissions). Key pollutants: CO, SO₂, NOx , PM2.5, PM10.

Major Causes of Air Pollution Vehicular Emissions – Exhaust gases from cars and trucks. Industrial Activities – Factories, power plants, and chemical processing. Burning of Fossil Fuels – Coal, oil, and gas used in energy generation. Agricultural Activities – Fertilizers, pesticides, and stubble burning. Household Sources – Indoor cooking with biomass fuels, paints, and cleaning chemicals.

Types of Air Pollutants Primary Pollutants: Directly emitted (CO, NOx , SO₂, particulate matter). Secondary Pollutants: Formed by chemical reactions (ozone, smog). Particulate Matter (PM): Tiny particles that enter lungs and bloodstream. Greenhouse Gases: Contribute to climate change (CO₂, methane).

Effects on Human Health Respiratory diseases (asthma, bronchitis, COPD). Cardiovascular issues and reduced life expectancy. Neurological and developmental problems in children. WHO : Air pollution causes ~7 million premature deaths annually.

Environmental Impacts Acid rain damaging forests, soil, and aquatic life. Reduced visibility and smog formation in cities. Harm to crops and biodiversity. Contributes to global warming and climate change.

Measures to Reduce Air Pollution Promote public transport and electric vehicles. Transition to renewable energy sources. Implement stricter emission controls for industries. Encourage tree plantation and green spaces. Awareness campaigns on waste management and energy conservation.

Conclusion & Call to Action Air pollution is a shared responsibility — government, industries, and individuals must act. Every small step counts: reduce, reuse, recycle, and conserve energy. “ The future is in the air we breathe — let’s keep it clean.”
