About This Presentation

Railroad accidents due to negligence can be blamed on different groups. Some may be the fault of the railway company itself, whereas others are because a conductor or railroad employee was negligent. Some accidents are even caused by the neglect of a government agency.

RAILWAY ACCIDENTS PRESENTED BY AGLAIA

Railway Accidents-definition It is a serious accident due to natural or man-made causes, that may lead to loss of many lives and/or grievous injuries to a large number of people. 2 RAILWAY ACCIDENTS

3 RAILWAY ACCIDENTS

Train Accident Statistics Trains are estimated to kill 1 person every 100 minutes. More than half of all accidents occur at unprotected crossings. Occupants of vehicles that collide with a train are 40 times more likely to die than if they had collided with another vehicle of comparable size. 4 RAILWAY ACCIDENTS

Classification of Railways Accidents Railway accidents are categorized into different classes according to the type of accident. 5 RAILWAY ACCIDENTS

Collision refers to one train crashing or running into another train or rolling stock.   A derailments occurs when a train skids off the track because of some obstruction or abnormality. Accidents at level crossings   Out of the 37,345 level crossings existing on Indian Railways , only 16,607 level crossings were manned and had gatekeepers; the rest were unmanned and did not have gatekeepers. RAILWAY ACCIDENTS 6

Fire accidents in trains  Train fires, particularly fires in passenger trains, take a heavy toll on life and property.    Electric lighting:  The railways have switched over from gas lighting to electric   lighting.   Accidents due to floods and breaches: it creates unsafe conditions on the tracks and causing accidents. RAILWAY ACCIDENTS 7

Causes of Train & Railroad Accidents 1. Negligence It may be result in huge accidents. example of negligence is when a crossing arm is operated incorrectly. Another careless mistake is if the operator forgot or failed to turn on the signal light. 2. Reckless Pedestrians & Drivers It can cause a collision by standing on or crossing the tracks at the wrong time. 8 RAILWAY ACCIDENTS

3. Human Error It is the most common reasons for any accidents. Poor judgment ,vision issues etc can contribute to train disasters. 4. Mechanical Failure They are more rare than other common causes of train collisions, but they do occasionally happen. 5. Speedy Trains faster train will create more consequences like crash, derailment etc. 9 RAILWAY ACCIDENTS

6. Defective Tracks Obstruction is a common issue with the tracks and can cause train derailment. 7. Derailments It is when a train runs off its rail, either because of a collision with another object, a conductor error, mechanical track failure, broken rails, etc 8. Unprotected railroad crossings More than 50% of railroad accidents occur at unprotected crossings. 10 RAILWAY ACCIDENTS

9. Attempted train wrecking Wrecking of tracks by antisocial elements such as; Robbing passengers or mails containing valuable parcels. Pilfering consignments from goods train. Obtaining jobs for relaying or supervising the track. Personal enmity between railway officials.

Steps Taken To Prevent Train Accidents Conduct seminars on Safety measures. Onboard detection systems that alert engineers of faulty components Ultrasonic and geometric track inspection  systems that gather data with lasers to help more accurately schedule and identify needed repairs. 12 RAILWAY ACCIDENTS

Sensors at railway crossings  to detect when someone enters, by foot or by car, an area a train will cross Drones to conduct aerial inspections. Workplace practices that emphasize passenger safety , including improved screening of job candidates, better training etc. RAILWAY ACCIDENTS 13
