What is a chart? A chart , also called a graph , is a graphical representation of data, in which the data is represented by symbols, such as bars in a bar chart, lines in a line chart, or slices in a pie chart .

Writing About Graphs, Charts and Tables Underline key words. Write related words - turn nouns into verbs, verbs into nouns, adjectives into adverbs, etc. Write opposite words, similar words, synonyms, etc. Circle and highlight the graph. Use arrows. Identify trends. A trend is the overall idea of the graph . Don’t write about everything on the graph. Pick the biggest, the smallest, the main points, the main trends. Group similar things together . Don’t use “I feel”, “as I have written,” “as you can see,” etc. Keep it academic.

Beside that , the highest total expenditure is recorded in June , amounting to $1,660.
Example Upon initial inspection , a few interesting trends emerge . For instance , there is a gradual increase in the amount allocated for Food from January to August, with a peak in August at $980. The Transportation expenses show some fluctuations , reaching the highest point in October at $580. Utilities , on the other hand , exhibit slight variations but generally maintain a steady range between $140 and $200.
Example In the Food category , March stands out as the month with the lowest spending , totaling $820. For Transportation , January records the lowest spending at $500. Similarly , in the Utilities category , the month with the lowest spending is March, with an expense of $140.
