Slide Content

Random Variables and Probability Distributions illustrates a random variable. distinguishes between a discrete and a continuous random variable. finds the possible values of a random variable.

PROBABILITY Probability is a field of mathematics that deals with CHANCE. An Experiment is an activity in which the result cannot be predicted with certainty. Each repetition of an experiment is called a trial. An outcome is a result of an experiment. An event is any collection of outcomes, and a simple event is an event with only one possible outcome. The sample space for a given experiment is a set S that contains all possible outcomes of the experiment. In an experiment for which the sample space is S, the probability of an event occurring is given by the formula.

TYPES OF RANDOM VARIABLE

DISCRETE OR CONTINUOUS? Score of students in a quiz How long students ate breakfast Time to finish running 100m Amount of paint utilized in a building project The number of deaths per year attributed to lung cancer The speed of a car The number of dropout in a school district for a period of 10 years The number of voters favoring a candidate

DISCRETE OR CONTINUOUS? 9. The time needed to finish the test 10. How long students ate breakfast 11. Average temperature in Baguio City for the past 5 days 12. Weights of 8 randomly selected Math books 13. Amount of sugar in a cup of coffee 14. Amount of rainfall (in mm) in different cities in NCR 15. Number of gifts received by 20 students during Christmas season
