Exercise It is a form of PHYSICAL ACTIVITY done primarily to improve one’s health and physical fitness

Benefits of physical exercise reduce your risk of a heart attack  manage your weight have a lower blood cholesterol level  lower the risk of diabetes and some cancers  have lower blood pressure  have stronger bones, muscles and joints and lower risk of developing osteoporosis 

lower your risk of falls  recover better from periods of hospitalisation or bed rest  feel better – with more energy, a better mood, feel more relaxed and sleep better.  Exercise may block negative thoughts or distract you from daily worries.  Exercising with others, provides an opportunity for increased social contact.  Increased fitness may lift your mood and improve your sleep patterns. 

RANGE OF MOTION ROM refers to how far you can move or stretch a part of your body, such as a joint or a muscle. Its different from each of us. For example, Some people can do complete splits, but others cant; there joints aren’t loose and their muscles wont lengthen as far

Purposes of Range Of Motion Exercise To stimulate circulation Promote and maintain joint mobility To promote comfort of the patient To prevent contractures To maintain muscle strength To restore normal motion for joints

Contraindication to ROM Exercise Any illness or disorder where increased use of energy or increased circulation is hazardous. Example, MI Connective tissue disorder Inflamed joints.

TYPES OF ROM Active ROM Passive ROM Active assisted ROM

Active ROM Exercises Exercises that the client is able to perform independently . Passive ROM Exercises Exercises performed from the client by someone else.

A ctive assised ROM Exercises Performed by client with some assistance, Client can move a limb partially through its ROM, but needs help to completing the ROM

Guidelines for performing range of motion exercises Start with the head and move down, Do not grasp the joint directly Do not grasp fingernail or toenail, Important joints, Thumb Hip Knee Ankle Move to point of resistance not pain Allow for rest periods whenever required Should not disrupt the healing process

Patient Preparation Explain the steps and advantages of ROM exercises Remove all restrictive clothing, linen, splint and dressings Provide privacy Raise the bed to comfortable height
