Squeaky is known for her speed and determination. She takes running seriously and is always training, as she believes that hard work and practice are the keys to winning. Besides running, her other main responsibility is caring for Raymond, who requires extra attention. Squeaky is protective of him and does not hesitate to stand up to anyone who teases or disrespects him.
As she prepares for the May Day races, she encounters a group of girls, including her rival, Gretchen, and two other girls, Mary Louise and Rosie. They attempt to intimidate her, but Squeaky, known for her sharp tongue and confidence, remains unfazed. She acknowledges that Gretchen is a strong competitor but is determined to win, as she always has in the past.
On the day of the race, Squeaky lines up with the other runners, ready to prove herself once again. However, as she sprints down the track, something changes. Out of the corner of her eye, she notices Raymond running alongside the fence, mimicking her movements with impressive speed and determination. For the first time, she sees her brother not as someone she simply has to protect, but as a potential runner himself.
When the race ends, she is less concerned about whether she won and more excited about the idea of coaching Raymond and helping him develop his talent. This marks a significant transformation in her character—she moves from being focused on her own achievements to realizing the joy of supporting someone else’s growth.
