SIX TIPS FOR BUILDING &
MAINTAINING PROFESSIONAL
CONNECTIONS
Tip #1 - Define goals:
Set goals for your professional network.
GOAL EXAMPLES
Expand Industry Knowledge: Aim to connect with seasoned professionals in various facets of the
multifamily industry, such as property management, investment, and development, to gain
insights and mentorship. This can help you understand the broader industry trends and best
practices.
Increase Visibility and Influence: Set a goal to increase your presence at industry conferences,
webinars, and local apartment association events. Building relationships with key industry leaders
can help you become more recognized in the field, potentially leading to speaking opportunities or
leadership roles within professional organizations.
Identify Potential Career Opportunities: Focus on building relationships with hiring managers,
recruiters, and industry peers who can provide guidance or inform you about job openings. This
can help you stay aware of new opportunities and advance your career in the multifamily sector.
GOAL QUESTIONS
What are my short-term and long-term career objectives? - How can my network help me achieve
these goals?
Who are the key people or types of professionals I need to connect with? - Which industries,
roles, or companies are most relevant to my career aspirations?
What specific knowledge or skills am I seeking to develop? - Can my network provide
opportunities for learning, mentorship, or growth?
What value can I offer to others in my network? - How can I contribute to their success or goals?
What events, platforms, or organizations should I focus on to build the right connections? -
Where can I find the people who align with my professional objectives?
How will I measure the success of my networking efforts? - What milestones or outcomes will
indicate that my networking is effective? -
What kind of relationships do I want to build—transactional, collaborative, or long-term? - How
will these relationships support my professional journey?
How much time and effort am I willing to invest in networking? - What strategies can I use to make
the most of my networking activities?
Tip #2 - Leverage social media platforms (it’s FREE!!):
If you don’t have something to say, share valuable
content, engage with industry peers, and participate in
discussions.

Tip #3 - Listen actively
ACTIVE LISTENING IN
NETWORKING
Maintain Eye Contact: Show that you are focused on the conversation by maintaining appropriate
eye contact, which helps convey interest and attentiveness.
1.
Avoid Interrupting: Allow the other person to finish their thoughts without interrupting. This
shows respect and gives you a complete understanding of their perspective before responding.
2.
Reflect and Clarify: Paraphrase or summarize what the other person has said to confirm your
understanding. For example, "So, if I understand correctly, you're saying that...?"
3.
Ask Open-Ended Questions: Encourage the other person to share more by asking questions that
cannot be answered with a simple "yes" or "no." This deepens the conversation and shows that
you value their input.
4.
Provide Thoughtful Feedback: Respond with comments that show you've considered what they've
said. For example, "That's an interesting point. It reminds me of a similar challenge I faced when..."
5.
Be Mindful of Nonverbal Cues: Pay attention to the speaker's body language and tone, as these
can provide additional context to their words. Also, be conscious of your own nonverbal cues,
ensuring they align with your intention to listen actively.

Tip #4 - Offer value:
Provide value and build trust.
WHY VALUE IS
IMPORTANT
Establishes Trust: When you provide something of value to others, they are more
likely to trust you. Trust is the foundation of any strong professional relationship.
1.
Strengthens Relationships: Offering value shows that you care about the other
person’s success and well-being, which helps to build stronger, more meaningful
connections.
2.
Increases Reciprocity: When you help others, they are more inclined to help you
in return. This creates a cycle of mutual support and benefits within your
professional network.
3.
Enhances Your Reputation: Consistently providing value makes you known as
someone who is resourceful, helpful, and trustworthy, enhancing your reputation
in your professional community.
