4. The concept of stem cells was first theorized in the late 19th century by Theodor Boveri and Valentin Haecker . The first key properties of a stem cell were defined in the early 1960s when they discovered the blood-forming stem cell, the hematopoietic stem cell (HSC), through their work in mice. Later, in 1981, identified, isolated, and cultured embryonic stem cells from a mouse blastocyst and t he first human embryonic stem cells were isolated in 1998. history
