REDUCTION OF TURBIDITY OF WATER USING LOCALLY AVAILABLE NATURAL COAGULATION Presented By R.DHAMODHARAN - 912819103002 M.SANJAY SARAVANAN - 912819103017 B.SARAVANAN - 912819103302 Guided By: Mrs.G.RAJESWARI.M.E ., Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, Syed Ammal Engineering College.

ABSTRACT Turbidity imparts a great problem in water treatment. In this Project, Moringa oleifera, Cicer arietinum, Strychnos potatorum and Tamarindus indica are used as locally available natural coagulants to reduce turbidity of water. The tests are carried out, using turbid water with conventional jar test apparatus. Optimum mixing intensity and duration has to be determined. Natural coagulants worked better with high, turbid, water compare to medium, or low, turbid, water. Using locally available natural coagulants, suitable, easier, and environment friendly options for water treatment has to be observed .

INTRODUCTION Water is undoubtedly the most vital element among all the natural resources. In many developing countries, access to clean and safe water is a crucial issue. More than 6 million people die because of diarrhea which is caused by polluted water. Due to rapid urbanization and migration from rural areas, there is a tremendous load on water consumption in all major cities. Water condition of surface water of most of the highly populated regions have become highly polluted due to indiscriminate discharge of untreated waste from tannery, textile, municipal waste into water bodies, etc. One of the problems with treatment of surface water is the large seasonal variation in ‘Turbidity’.

INTRODUCTION (Cont.,) Turbidity is the cloudiness or haziness of a fluid caused by large numbers of individual particles that are generally invisible to the naked eye, similar to smoke in air. The measurement of turbidity is a key test of water quality. Fluids can contain suspended solid matter consisting of particles of many different sizes. While some suspended material will be large enough and heavy enough to settle rapidly to the bottom of the container if a liquid sample is left to stand, very small particles will settle only very slowly or not at all if the sample is regularly agitated or the particles are colloidal. These small solid particles cause the liquid to appear turbid.

OBJECTIVES The major objectives of this study are: To reduce the level of Turbidity and thereby indirectly microbial contaminants from water using locally available natural coagulants. To make the water treatment process easier, safe, and environment friendly for household applications.

LITERATURE REVIEW S.No Year author Title Material Test Result 1. 2022 Manimaran Govindarajan Cost-Effective Treatment for Polluted Groundwater Using Eco-Friendly Bio-Coagulants Artocarpusheterophyllus (Jackfruit peel), Momordicacharantia (Bitter gourd seed), Musa paradisiaca (Banana flower leaf) and Cynodondactylon ( Scutch grass). pH Turbidity Test , BOD & COD Tsest These natural coagulants reduce BOD, COD and salt content. After treatment, the groundwater can be used for domestic purposes. As it is a cost- effective and eco-friendly method it can be afforded by large population

LITERATURE REVIEW S.No Year author Title Material Test Result 2. 2021 S.Nimesha Effectiveness of natural coagulants in water and wastewater treatment Citrullus Lanatus (Watermelon seeds) pH & Turbidity Test Turbidity reduction efficiency of about 68% was noticed. The water can be used for domestic purposes. Also it is a cost- effective and eco-friendly method

LITERATURE REVIEW S.No Year author Title Material Test Result 3. 2021 Bahman Ramavandi Treatment of water turbidity and bacteria by using a coagulant extracted from Plantago ovata Plantago ovata by using an FeCl3-induced crude extract (FCE) pH & Turbidity Test The maximum turbidity removal was occurred at water pHo8. At the optimum dosage of FCE, only 0.8 mg/L of dissolved organic carbon was released to the treated water

LITERATURE REVIEW S.No Year author Title Material Test Result 4. 2020 B.A.P. Serasinghe Effectiveness of Locally Available Plant Materials in the Dry Zone of Sri Lanka as Natural Coagulants in Treating Turbid Water Arjun ( Terminalia arjuna ), Jack fruit ( Artocarpus heterophyllus ), Clearing nut (Strychnos potatorum L.) seeds and Aloe (Aloe vera ) pH & Turbidity Test Terminalia arjuna showed the highest turbidity removal efficiency of 84.8 (± 8.9) %.

LITERATURE REVIEW S.No Year author Title Material Test Result 5. 2018 R.RajKumar Utilisation Of Natural Coagulant For Reduction Of Turbidity From Waste water Tamarind Seed Powder pH & Turbidity Test Highest turbidity reduction efficiency of about 78% was noticed. Influence of the pH on the system found to be significant on turbidity removal.

LITERATURE SUMMARY From this literature Study, We carried our project for the turbidity removal of water by using the Powdered seeds of Moringa oleifera, Cicer arietinum, Strychnos potatorum and Tamarindus indica. Also we have planned for comparative study on the Turbidity and pH characteristics of water using the above mentioned natural coagulants.
