NORTHERN MINDANAO REGION X

NORTHERN MINDANAO is an administrative region of the Philippines and is designated as Region 10. It comprises of 5 provinces namely Camiguin , Bukidnon , Lanao Del Norte, Misamis Ociidental and Misamis Oriental . It has 2 highly urbanized city which are the Cagayan de Oro City and Iligan City.

Regional Center: Cagayan De Oro City Land Area: 20,496 sq.km Population (as of 2015): 4,689,302 Consists of 24 municipalities and 2,022 barangays. It is the 8 th most populous region in the Philippines and 2 nd in Mindanao (after Davao). Roman Catholic is their predominant religion (72%) others are Protestant and Islam.

Bounded on the North by the Bohol Sea , on the East by the Province of Agusan del Norte , on the South by Davao Del Norte and West by the Zamboanga Del Sur and Lanao Del Sur. Dialects Spoken : Cebuano, Maranao , Hiligaynon, Subanon , Bukid , Kamigin , Ilianen , Matigsalug , Iranun . The vast majority of the region’s inhabitants descended from the migrants from Cebu and Bohol .

Lanao Del Norte was transferred to Northern Mindanao from Region 12 by the virtue of Executive Order No. 36 in September 2001.

ETYMOLOGY The term Northern Mindanao was officially coined by the Americans after the establishment of American colonial rule in the Philippines due to the defeat of Filipino revolutionaries .  

ETYMOLOGY There have been other proposals to change the name of the region; Amihanan Region meaning “ Northern Area ” to Cebuano Language. CALAMINON – acronym of the region’s provinces.

ECONOMY AND INDUSTRY The economy in the region is mainly Agricultural, Forestry, Fishing and Hunting. The top commodities produced are Banana, Pineapple, Chicken, Hog and Corn. The Agus -IV to VII Hydroelectric Plants in  Iligan  and  Balo-i , Lanao del Norte supplies most of its electrical power in Mindanao. There is also a booming growth of industries and manufacturing particularly in Iligan and Cagayan De Oro.

CAMIGUIN

PROVINCE OF CAMIGUIN “The Island Born of Fire” Capital: Mambajo Area: 237.95 sq.km Population(as of 2015): 88 , 478 Municipalities: 5 Cities: 0 Barangays: 58

PROVINCE OF CAMIGUIN It is the 2 nd smallest both land area and population next to batanes . The name Camiguin derived from the native word “ Kamagong ” meaning species of ebony tree. It is famous for its sweet lanzones . The other land parts of the Camiguin island was formed by eruptions of different volcanoes in it.

HISTORY OF CAMIGUIN 1521and 1565 – Ferdinand Magellan and Miguel Lopez de Legazpi landed in the island. The first Spanish settlement in the island was called “ Guinsiliban ”, a Kinamiguin word meaning “ to look out for pirates from a watchtower” .

HISTORY OF CAMIGUIN 1901 – American forces landed in the island assuming to have a political control on it. A group of Camiguingnons led by Valero Camaro , fought for the Independence from foreign invasion. Valero Camaro was killed and shot by the forehead. He became one of the unsung Camiguin patriots of the early independence movement.

HISTORY OF CAMIGUIN June 18, 1942 - the Japanese Imperial Army landed in Camiguin and set up a government in Mambajao . 1945 - Philippine Commonwealth forces landed in Camiguin and liberated the Island during the Battle of Camiguin against the Japanese Imperial forces at the end of World War II.

HISTORY OF CAMIGUIN From 1946 to 1958 , Camiguin was part of Misamis Oriental . In 1958 , it became a sub-province and in 1968 , a full-fledged province with Mambajao as its provincial capital.

BUKIDNON

PROVINCE OF BUKIDNON “Watershed of Mindanao” Capital: Malaybalay City Area: 10,498.59 sq.km Population(as of 2015): 1,415,226 Municipalities: 20 Component Cities: 2 Barangays: 464

PROVINCE OF BUKIDNON “Watershed of Mindanao” The name “ Bukidnon ” means highlander or mountain dweller. Food Basket of the region, being the major producer of rice and corn. It is the 3 rd largest province in t erms of total area of jurisdiction. Bukidnon occupies a wider area of plateau in Northern part of Mindanao.

HISTORY OF BUKIDNON 1820 – Bukidnon became a part of Misamis . The whole area was called Malaybalay and the people were known as “ Bukidnon ” or mountain dwellers. Dean C. Worcester – head of the Philippine Comission , proposed the separation of Bukidnon from Misamis .

HISTORY OF BUKIDNON August 20, 1907 , the Philippine Commission Act No. 1693 was enacted the Province of Agusan and sub-province of Bukidnon .  March 10, 1917 – Bukidnon became a regular province under Philippine Act 2711.

HISTORY OF BUKIDNON 1942 – Japanese Troops invaded the province. 1945 - the province was liberated from Japanese occupation by Filipino and American troops with the aid of Bukidnon -based Filipino guerrillas during the Second World War.

LANAO DEL NORTE

PROVINCE OF LANAO DEL NORTE “ Tanglaw ng Bansa ” Republic Act No. 2228 the former Lanao province was divided into 2 provinces, namely the LANAO DEL NORTE and LANAO DEL SUR. 44.19% of the population of the province are adherent of Islam ( predinantly Sunnites )

HISTORY OF LANAO DEL NORTE The province of  Lanao  existed from 1914 until 1959.  Republic Act No. 2228  divided Lanao into two (2) provinces creating Lanao del Norte and  Lanao del Sur. The new province was inaugurated on July 4, 1959 making  Iligan City as the capital.

HISTORY OF LANAO DEL NORTE 1977 - President  Ferdinand E. Marcos signed  Resolution No. 805, series of 1977  of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan ( Parliamentary Bill No. 586 ) sponsored by Assemblyman Abdullah D. Dimaporo , into  Presidential Decree 181  transferring the province's capital from  Iligan City to the municipality of  Tubod .

HISTORY OF LANAO DEL NORTE Despite of the outbreak of the conflict of the MILF on March 2000, through the efforts of the provincial government, peace and order was restored in the province.

PROVINCE OF MISAMIS ORIENTAL The name  Misamis  is believed to have been derived from the  Subanen  word  Kuyamis   which is a variety of coconut, the staple food of the early settlers . 68% of its population are Roman Catholics Majority of its people are speaking Cebuano dialect

HISTORY OF MISAMIS ORIENTAL Around the 10th Century , the area of what is now Misamis Oriental was under the Indianized Kingdom called the  Rajahnate of Butuan . In the 16th century , Muslims from Malaysia came and then displaced the non-Muslim  Lumads  northwards as they came to control most of Mindanao, the inhabitants were converted into Islam.

HISTORY OF MISAMIS ORIENTAL During the Spanish settlement, the province was vulnerable to Moro Raids. The Fuerza de la Concepcion y del Triunfo in  Ozamiz was built as a Spanish military installation and one of the staging points in their expeditions against Moros

HISTORY OF MISAMIS ORIENTAL Legislative Act. No. 3537  approved on November 2 1929 , divided the province of  Misamis  into two due to the lack of geographic contiguity . November 28 1939 , that the division between Misamis Oriental and  Misamis Occidental was implemented by  Act. No. 3777 .
