REGULATED POWER SUPPLY By: Sandip Katel Saphal Rimal Saroj Paudel Sarthak Pokhrel

INTRODUCTION Also known as a linear power supply, Essential component of many electronic devices, providing a stable and reliable power source, Converts unregulated AC supply to constant output current/voltage, Output of this circuit is not absolute DC, but nearly DC, O utput voltage can be monitored using an external meter or a built- in voltmeter , U sed in a variety of electronic devices and systems to ensure that the voltage or current supplied to the circuits is always within the specified range.

CONSTRUCTION Consist of Step Down T ransformer Rectifier Circuit Filter Circuit Voltage Regulator Sometimes a feedback circuit Rectifier Circuit Filter Circuit Voltage Regulator Unregulated AC input R egulated DC output Fig: Block diagram of regulated power supply

WORKING PRINCIPLE High voltage AC signal is stepped down to required voltage using step down transformer, Rectifier circuit converts low voltage AC signals into pulsating DC, Large fluctuation of DC signal are smoothen by Filter circuits (Capacitive filter, Inductive filter), Rectifier Circuit Filter Circuit Voltage Regulator Unregulated AC input R egulated DC output Fig: Block diagram of regulated power supply

WORKING PRINCIPLE Output from filter is almost fixed DC supply with small fluctuation called ripple, Finally output voltage is stabilized using voltage regulator (Shunt voltage regulator, Series voltage regulator or Three terminal regulators). Depending upon application its complexity varies. Rectifier Circuit Filter Circuit Voltage Regulator Unregulated AC input R egulated DC output Fig: Block diagram of regulated power supply

TYPES Linearly Regulated Power Supplies Switch Regulated Power Supplies 5Ampere 0-30V DC regulated power supply

LINEARLY REGULATED POWER SUPPLIES Uses a series regulator or shunt regulator circuit to adjust the output voltage by dissipating excess power as heat, S imple , reliable, and provides low output noise and ripple, N ot very efficient, T he power dissipation can cause the regulator to overheat, limiting the maximum output power, Uses voltage regulators like L7805 , LM317, and LM7809,etc.

LINEARLY REGULATED POWER SUPPLIES Some common examples Wall-wart power adapters for electronic devices, Linear power supplies used in audio equipment such as amplifiers, Bench power supplies used in labs for testing and prototyping, Linear regulators used in microcontroller boards for providing stable voltage to the microcontroller, etc.   12V, 850mA AC/DC Wall WART Power Supply Adapter

SWITCH REGULATED POWER SUPPLIES Uses a switching regulator circuit to adjust the output voltage by switching the input voltage on and off at high frequencies, M ore complex and compact size, High efficiency, S uitable for battery-powered devices or applications that require high efficiency, C an generate more output noise and ripple than linear regulators, Uses Voltage regulators like LM2575 and LM2675.

SWITCH REGULATED POWER SUPPLIES Some common examples Laptop chargers Mobile phone chargers LED drivers Power supplies used in computer motherboards and graphics cards Power supplies used in industrial control systems and automation equipment, etc. 65V 800W Switch Power Supply Regulated Switching Power Supply

RECENT TREND ON REGULATED POWER SUPPLY Increasing use of switch-mode power supplies (SMPS) over linear power supplies. Due to High efficiency, Light weight, Small size, Wide range of applications. Use of digital control technique on regulated power supply U ses microcontrollers and digital signal processors (DSPs) to monitor, Adjusts the output voltage and current, providing more accurate and reliable regulation. Also allows remote monitoring and control, real-time performance optimization, and fault detection and protection.

RECENT TREND ON REGULATED POWER SUPPLY Also there is increasing focus on power supply efficiency and energy conservation, Research on reliable, environment friendly power supply driven by concerns over climate change and rising energy costs. Also are being used in energy-efficient products such as LED lighting and electric vehicles, A re being designed to meet strict energy efficiency standards such as Energy Star and 80 PLUS, etc.
