RELATIVE CLAUSES Let’s combıne sentences!

WHERE? WHO? WHEN? WHICH? WHOSE?

Defining and Nondefining Relative Clauses A defining relative clause identifies who or what we are speaking about, whereas a non-defining relative clause just gives us more information about who or what we are speaking about. A defining relative clause is essential in a sentence because we need it in order to know who or what someone is describing.

WHO * subject or object pronoun for people EX: I told you about the woman  who  lives next door.

WHICH * subject or object pronoun for animals and things EX: Do you see the cat  which  is “meowing” on the roof?

WHOSE * possession for people animals and things EX: Do you know the boy  whose  mother is a nurse?

that * subject or object pronoun for people, animals and things ( who  or  which  are also possible) EX: I don’t like the table   that  stands in the kitchen. I admire people that can do winter sports.

WHERE * referring to a place EX: There is a big shopping mall where   you can find everything.

WHEN * referring to a time EX: I love times   when  I see my favourite movie on TV.
