RETAIL INDUSTRY The sale of goods or commodities in small quantities directly to consumers is known as retailing. A ‘retailer’ buys goods or products in large quantities from manufacturers or importers either directly or through a whole seller and then smaller quantities to end users. Retail is India’s largest industry, accounting for over 10% of the country’s GDP and around 8% of employment. The Indian retail industry is valued about $300 billionand is expected to grow to $637 billion in 2015. Retail contributes 27% share of world GDP

RELIANCE RETAIL LIMITED With a vision to generate inclusive growth and prosperity for farmers, vendor partners, small shopkeepers and consumers, Reliance Retail Limited (RRL), a subsidiary of RIL, was set up to lead Reliance Group’s foray into organized retail. RRL launched it’s first store in November 2006 through it’s convenience store format ‘Reliance Fresh’.

  Founded in 2006 and based in  Mumbai , it is the largest retailer in India in terms of revenue. Its retail outlets offer foods, groceries, apparel and footwear, lifestyle and home improvement products, electronic goods, and farm implements and inputs. The company’s outlets also provide vegetables, fruits and flowers. It focuses on consumer goods, consumer durables, travel services, energy, entertainment and leisure, and health and well-being products, as well as on educational products and services.

Reliance Fresh : Retail outlets of fruits, vegetables & groceries . Reliance Digital : Consumer Electronics retail stores. It had 689 stores in October 2014. Reliance LYF : 4G mobile handset manufacturer based in Mumbai, founded in 2015. Reliance Jewels : Jewelry retail; it had revenues of approx. Rs. 8 billion in financial year 2012-13 . Reliance Time Out : Lifestyle store of Books, Music, Movies, Toys, Gaming, Fragrances, Stationery. Reliance Trends , Reliance Footprint and Reliance Living : Apparel and Clothing. It had revenues of approx. Rs. 16 billion in financial year 2012-13 with a store count of 287 Reliance Market , Wholesale cash n Carry : It had revenues of approx. Rs. 1.6 billion in financial year 2012-13 . AJIO : One of the company’s first forays into e-commerce – a fashion website, launched with the philosophy ‘Doubt is Out ’.

2014 : Launches Reliance Digital Express Mini, a chain of small stores dealing in mobility and communication devices 2015 : Reliance Retail 2.0 unveiled with launch of multi-channel initiatives. Announces partnership with BCBGMAXAZRIA, Juicy Couture and Cherokee 2016 : Launches www.ajio.com a curated fashion e-commerce platform and www.Footprint360.com a multi-channel e-commerce platform for Reliance Footprint

SWOT ANALYSIS STRENGTH: It is Indian retail chain with 3553 stores. It owns various private label brands. It has strong distribution network. Strong backing of the parent company. WEAKNESS: Product variety is available but more SKUs are not present due to inefficient back end infrastructure. Poor inventory control at certain locations is a concern.

OPPORTUNITIES: Sourcing directly from farmers; no middlemen. Leveraging on brand name and entering into Reliance saloon. Large potential to reduce operation cost in cities using strong supply chain. THREATS: Strong competition globally from Carrefour, Metro A.G., Tesco. Operationg cost are too high. Wallmart is biggest competitor when it comes to sourcing/ backward integration

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY (CSR) Initiatives in education, health, environment and social development of the weaker sections form a sizeable chunk of Reliance’s social outreach programs.   We seek to achieve sustainable and profitable growth, creating thriving eco-systems around all our businesses. Our strategy includes fostering close and continuous interaction with the people and communities around our manufacturing divisions, bringing qualitative changes in their lives and supporting the underprivileged.

Some of Reliance's initiatives to promote environment protection include investing in renewable energy sources, promoting green plantations and spreading environmental awareness . We have converted acres of arid lands into m ajor green zones . Reliance supports local schools with logistical and financial support, capacity building of teachers and infrastructure development . Reliance nurtures and sponsors many projects designed to educate, employ and empower women and youth in and around the catchment areas of its operations.

Project Jagruti : A project to uplift and bring dyslexic students from the underprivileged segment into the main stream . Reliance Dhirubhai Ambani Protsaham Scheme: A scheme for supporting meritorious students and providing financial aid to the toppers for pursuing higher studies in engineering and medical streams . Reliance HIV/DOTS Therapy Centre : This Centre's programme for the underprivileged is run with the support from various governmental and non-governmental organizations.

Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital: The hospital plays a significant role in improving the quality of life with its prompt and specialized services and by providing free lifesaving treatment. Reliance Foundation : To provide impetus to various philanthropic initiatives of RIL, Reliance Foundation (RF) was set up in 2010 as an expression of its vision towards sustainable growth in India . Reliance Foundation has cumulatively touched the lives of 4 million people in over 5000 villages and various urban locations.
