REMOVING DRIED CLOTHES AND OTHER WASHED ITEMS Prepared by: MARIA CRISTINA C. DELMO, SST-III
REMOVING DRIED CLOTHES AND OTHER WASHED ITEMS Whether machine washed, or hand washed, clothes, linens, and other garments are air-dried by hanging them either on a clothesline or a clothes rack. Sun drying is preferred over indoor air-drying because of its advantages. Neither technology, equipment, nor material can equal the freshness of well-dried garments under the heat of the sun. The Philippines enjoy many of its benefits. That is why in the province the sight of backyard clothesline are not only common but are very nostalgic. It brings back childhood memories.
In sun drying clothes and other garments, in addition to the clothesline, clothespins are also needed. They can be made of wood or plastic, but the purpose is the same – to hold the clothes securely on the clothesline. The removal of dried clothes and other garments depend on how they were hanged. There is a protocol on how washed clothes should be hanged to dry. ( Bobbit ).
TABLE 19. Hanging and Removing Clothing Items from the clothesline. Clothing Item and Concerns Hanging and Removing 1. Socks Hang by the toes to prevent stretching the top and to keep it even all around. A pair of socks should be hanged together. In removing, gently undo the clothespin and fold both; do not roll as this may over-stretched the fabric.
Clothing Item and Concerns Hanging and Removing 2. Pants & Slacks Hang by the seam, not by the waist. Place the two seams together and pin on the clothesline. With the waist and the pockets down, air can readily circulate around those parts. When removing, do not be tempted to pull the pants or slacks by the waist. Undo the pin and gently fold the pair ready for ironing.
Clothing Item and Concerns Hanging and Removing 3. Shirts Hang by the tails, not by the shoulder. In removing shirts, do not pull by the shoulders as this may stretched the part that can cause bulking in that area when the shirt is worn.
Clothing Item and Concerns Hanging and Removing 4. Dress Hang dresses on hangers to dry but not directly by the shoulder. Dresses come with extra straps intended for hanging; use them. Pin the hanger though if the place is windy as it may blow the hanger off the line. Once dried, simply detach the hanger from the clothesline.
Clothing Item and Concerns Hanging and Removing 5. Color and Type Hang by tcolor , type, texture or fabric. This makes removing and folding a lot easier. Remove the same washed items together. If shirts will be removed first, them remove them all together, so it will be a lot easier to sort them later for ironing.
Clothing Item and Concerns Hanging and Removing 6. Reversing clothing item Hang clothes and other washed garments inside out, and after removing from the clothesline reverse them before folding to get ready for ironing.
Clothing Item and Concerns Hanging and Removing 7. Overlapping when hanging clothes Overlap clothes partly when hanging to save clothes –pin. When removing , be sure all pins have been undone before taking them lets you pull and stretch the fabric.
Clothing Item and Concerns Hanging and Removing 8. Removing dried items before dinner time. Remove all sun-dried clothes, linen and other garments before dinner time, neatly folded ready for ironing. By 5 o’clock in the afternoon, the sun is no longer effective in drying the washed items. Do not leave clothes and other garments on the clothesline overnight.
STORING DRYING EQUIPTMENT AND MATERIALS After removing all the dried clothes, linen and garments, the rest of the materials used, except permanent clothesline, must be kept and stored. This is to prevent contaminants such as dust and mildew from settling on them. The following are the drying equipment and materials and their storing procedures.
STORING DRYING EQUIPTMENT AND MATERIALS 1. Clothes rack – Before storing it, the clothes rack must be wiped clean and dry. Because the racks are made of either construction quality plastic or stainless metals, they are not prone to mildew attack. 2. Retractable clothesline – If air-drying is done indoor using retractable clothes-line, be sure that the line is dry and clean before it is drawn back. Regularly wipe the casing to rid it of dust film that may harbor contaminants.
STORING DRYING EQUIPTMENT AND MATERIALS 1. Hanger – Always wipe hangers clean and dry before storing. They should be kept in a hanger stand because a pile can cause a slip or a fall when step on especially those made of plastic because they are smooth. 2. Clothespin – These small multicolored plastic pins are attractive to children. If not stored properly, children may get caught in them causing injury. Do not leave the pins exposed in the sun on the clothesline. Keep them dry and away from children by placing them inside a clothespin bag or container.
