STILL LIFE TOPIC OUTLINE PORTRAIT PAINTING LANDSCAPES SEASCAPES MYTHOLOGY RELIGION DREAMS AND FANTASIES

STILL LIFE

FACTUAL MEANING A so-called ‘pronkstilleven’ or luxurious still life with expensive objects such as a Chinese dish, a salt cellar, a flute glass, a silver ewer and a fallen nautilus cup (made from a nautilus shell). "Still Life with Pie and Silver Ewer" a Painting by Willem Claesz. Heda (1658) SUBJECTIVE MEANING In this painting he has taken full advantage of the reflective qualities of shiny materials. In the silver jug, for instance, we can see the reflections not only of a window but also of the nautilus shell cup and the crab. The glazing bars of a window frame are reflected in the wine glass next to it. The pewter plate on the left reflects the porcelain plate, while the plate on the right shows the reflection of the crab lying on it.

PORTRAIT PAINTING

"Mona Lisa " a Painting by Leonardo da Vinci (1517) FACTUAL MEANING "Mona" was a common Italian contraction of " madonna," meaning "my lady," the equivalent of the English "Madam," so the title means "Madam Lisa" . In modern Italian the short form of "madonna" is usually spelled "Monna," so the title is sometimes given as Monna Lisa. SUBJECTIVE MEANING The painting has been definitively identified to depict Italian noblewoman Lisa Gherardini, the wife of Francesco del Giocondo. It is painted in oil on a white Lombardy poplar panel. For me, the painting is a visual representation of the idea of happiness suggested by the word "gioconda" in Italian. Leonardo made this notion of happiness the central motif of the portrait: it is this notion that makes the work such an ideal. The sense of overall harmony achieved in the painting especially apparent in the sitter’s faint smile reflects Leonardo’s idea of the cosmic link connecting humanity and nature, making this painting an enduring record of Leonardo’s vision.

LANDSCAPE

Vincent van Gogh night stars painting depicts the view outside his sanatorium room window at night, although it was painted from memory during the day. Starry Night depicts a dreamy interpretation of the artist's asylum room's sweeping view of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. The Starry Night symbolizes Van Gogh's deteriorating mental state. It also symbolizes his connection to nature and his interest in traveling to the stars through death. "Starry Night" a Painting by Vincent Van Gogh (1889) SUBJECTIVE MEANING FACTUAL MEANING This canvas depicts hope and It seems that van Gogh was showing that even with a dark night such as this it is still possible to see light in the windows of the houses. Furthermore, with shining stars filling the sky, there is always light to guide you. For me, I've always had this sentimental idea of him as this tragic, angst-filled artist who actually wanted to do so much for humanity (he was once an evangelist) but was constantly being rejected by society. This painting communicated to me this love he had for Gods beautiful creations, and yet, there is this unmistakable sense of loneliness as if no one really saw the world as he saw it.

SEASCAPE

"The great wave off Kanagawa" by Hokusai (1831) The Great Wave can be taken as a symbolic image of an important change happening to the Japanese society, a change which brings the presence of the foreign influences coming from the uncertainty of the sea and opposed to the firmness and stillness of Mount Fuji, the established symbol for the soul of Japan. FACTUAL MEANING SUBJECTIVE MEANING At first sight, the great wave is simply an image of a serene and timeless Japan, but take a closer look and you see that this beautiful wave is about to engulf three boats of terrified fishermen as Mount fuji and the shores of Japan recede into the distance. For me the artwork has an asymmetrical composition, with the waves taking up nearly the entire image, ensuring that they dominate the composition, emphasizing the threat and danger of the rough, crashing waves, as well as providing a sense of movement, allowing the audience to feel how helpless the fishermen were in the face.

MYTHOLOGY

"Perseus and Medusa" Sculpture by Benvenuto Cellini (1545-1554) FACTUAL MEANING SUBJECTIVE MEANING The statue had a political meaning and represented the power of the Duke who had 'cut off the head' of the Republic. Medusa symbolises the Republican experiment and the snakes coming out of her body are the discords that have always affected democracy For me, the sculptor shows that Perseus is more dominant than Medusa. It depicts the suspenseful battle he partake to kill the "gorgon" or the monster medusa. For me, the statue signifies perseverance, bravery, and dignity because Perseus personifies the length one would go to in order to save the ones you love.

RELIGION

"Creation of Adam" Fresco Painting by Michelangelo Buonarroti (1508-1512) FACTUAL MEANING SUBJECTIVE MEANING The Meaning of Michelangelo's Creation of Adam. The obvious meaning of this painting has everything to do with the creation of man and the start of the human race, but looking deeper, this painting is about the relationship that the creator has forged with his creation. In the picture you can see that the right arm of God is outstretched to touch the left arm of Adam extended in a pose mirroring God's, reminding that man is created in the image and likeness of God. God's imminent touch to Adam would breathe life into him and ultimately will give life to all mankind. It is, therefore, the birth of the human race.

DREAMS AND FANTASIES

"Dreamscapes" Illustrated by John Stephens (2018) FACTUAL MEANING SUBJECTIVE MEANING Fantasy never took on a more literal state than in the dreamscapes designed by John Stephens. Religious themes – both man-made and natural – are solidified in impressions of stained glass and gushing waterfalls, and each painting feels strangely grandiose and awe-inspiring. From a lack of proportion reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland , to the depiction of entire mountain ranges residing within cathedrals, the absurdity of the subject matter is offset only by the philosophical symbolism it’s underlined with. For me, the illustration depicts where the religious and fantasy world meets, in addition , it is where the mortal and immortal can interact. Also, it colors are more vibrant in which looks like it was in a dream.
