Reproductive system Wycliffe kinyua, BScN UNIVERSITY OF NAIROBI.

Female reproductive system. General objective To understand anatomy of the female reproductive system. Specific objective Identify the external female genital organs Identify the internal female genital organs List the functions of ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus and vagina Explain the three main layers of uterus

External female genital organs Formed by the vulva. The vulva consists of the following structures The mons pubis: a pad of fat, covered with pubic hair from the time of puberty. The labia majora: are two folds of fat and areolar tissue covered with skin and pubic hair on the outer surface.

External female genitalia

3. The labia minora: are two folds of skin lying between the labia majora. Anteriorly divide to enclose the clitoris and posteriorly, fuse forming the fourchette. 4. The clitoris: is a small rudimentary organ very sensitive and highly vascularized. Essential for sexual stimulation. 5.The vestibule: the area in which the openings of the urethra and the vagina are situated and enclosed by labia minora.

6. urethral orifice 7. vaginal orifice 8. the hymen: a thin membrane which tears down during sexual intercourse. 9: Bartholin’s gland. Two glands that open on the either side of the vaginal orifice. It secrets mucus, which lubricates the vaginal opening.

INTERNAL GENITALIA The internal genitalia consists of; Vagina Cervix Uterus Fallopian tube ovaries

Vagina Connects cervix to the external genitalia Located between the bladder and rectum Function as a passageway for menstrual flow. As the birth canal during labour

Perineum It is the muscle tissue located between the vaginal opening and anal canal. It supports and surrounds the lower parts of the urinary system. Has numerous nerve endings.

Cervix Connects the uterus to the vagina Protects the uterus from entry of foreign bodies. During childbirth, cervix dilates to allow passage of the fetus.

uterus It’s a pear shaped organ. The powerful muscles of the uterus expand to accommodate a growing fetus and push it through birth canal. The uterus consists of three layers namely; P erimetrium. Which is the outer serous layer. It secrets a lubricating fluid that helps to reduce friction. Myometrium. Middle layer. Comprises primarily of smooth muscle cells. It holds the structural integrity for the uterus and generates force for parturition.

Parts of uterus Endometrium. This is the inner layer of the uterus. Prepares for implantation, maintenance of pregnancy, menstruation in absence of pregnancy. The uterus shelters the fetus during pregnancy.

Fallopian tubes Serve as the passageway for ovum to the uterus. Are site for fertilization by the male sperm. Fertilized egg takes approximately 6 to 10 days to travel through the fallopian tube to implant in the uterine lining.
