The number of steps should not be more than 12 & less than 3 from
comfort point ofview
PITCH OF STAIR
Pitch should be limited to 30

HEAD ROOM
It should be preferably be not less than 2m
HAND RAIL
When a flight consist of more than three steps, a handrail atleaston one
side is considered to be necessity
The height of hand rail above the riser should be approximately 80cm

crowdandinconvenience.
InResidentialbuilding,a90cmwidestairissufficient
whileinpublic1.5to1.8mwidthmayrequired.
STEPDIMENSION
The rise and going should be of such dimensions as to
provide comfort tousers.
The going should not be less than 25 cm, though 30 cm
going is quitecomfortable.
The rise should be between 10 to 15cm.
All steps should be of uniform dimensions

(2 ×Rise in cm) + (Going in cm) =60 cm
(Rise in cm) + (Going in cm) = 40 to45 cm
(Rise in cm) ×(Going in cm) = 400 to450 cm

A ramp is a sloping surface and it is adopted as a substitute
for stair for easy connection between the floors.
The usual slope of a ramp is 1 in 15
The flooring of ramp should be non-slippery
The shape of ramp need not be straight.Itmay be of
spiral,curveetc.
The ramps are provided at places such as garage,railway
station,stadium,officebuildings etc.
ESCALATOR
Anescalatoris a moving staircase which carries people
between floors of a building. It consists of a motor-driven chain
of individually linked steps on a track which cycle on a pair of
tracks which keep them horizontal.

Angle of inclination -30 to 35°
Escalators are arranged in pairs,onefor upward
movement and other for downward movement
They are generally used when traffic of persons is heavy
between the floors
LIFT
A vertical transport equipment that efficiently moves people
between floors of abuilding
For multi storied buildings the installation of lift is essential to
avoid difficulties in climbing up the stairs and for quick vertical
movement between the floors
There are primarily two types of lifts are there
1.Passenger lifts:Passengerlifts are provided in aparment,high
rise buildings,officesetc. to lift the passengers from floor to
floor
2.Goods lift:Theyare provided in industrial buildings to carry
materials from one floor to another floor
