Research Methodology By Dr. Shaanika 13 April 2023

Lesson Objectives Understand the need for methodology in research Explain the differences between quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods research Be able to select a methodology for your study

What is methodology A way in which we approach problems and seek answers. Methodology :covers data collection techniques, data collection process and data analysis. A carrier to the desired destination. Selected in alignment with research aims, objectives and questions.

What is research methodology ? A vehicle undertaken to achieve study objectives. Logic or ways of reasoning to arrive at solutions. Rules of communication, i.e. to explain how the findings have been achieved ( Ghauri, Grønhaug & Strange, 2020).

Methodological choice

Qualitative research method A form of social inquiry - explore and uncover explanations, rather than deduce them from measurements. Study participants’ meanings and the relationships between them. Natural- study participants in their natural environment Subjective-Interpretive - each individual experience the world from their own point of view

Quantitative research method Main focus is counts and measurements of things Tends to be confirmatory Often begins with hypothesis and variables that needs to be tested and the results obtained are used for generalisation Reality should be studied objectively by the researchers who should put a distance between themselves.

Mixed research method Social phenomena are so complex, different kinds of methods are needed to best understand these complexities. Combines the use of quantitative and qualitative. Integration of subjectivity and objectivity . An objective need to be achieved by applying both methods.

Mixed Methods Designs

Methodologic choice A closer look at your objectives. What is the best way to resolve your problem: explanations or measurements , experiments?. Look at the potency/weakness of each method in relation to your research problem. The methods used will influence the type of data collection techniques.

Exercise : Identify type of research Performance evaluations of two algorithms (memory usage, processing time, etc) Users perceptions about a particular movie. (Visual quality, acceptance, interesting, etc) To understand the perceptions of using new mobile applications to disseminate information related to COVID-19 Study the performance of two systems producing a certain product e.g Bottle milk production
