HYPOTHESIS The word hypothesis consists of two words – Hypo+Thesis . ‘ Hypo ’ means tentative or subject to the verification . ‘ Thesis ’ means statement about solution of the problem .
Definition by John W. Best “A hypothesis is a statement temporarily accepted as true in the light of what is, at the time, known about a phenomenon, and it is employed as a basis for action in the search for new, truth, when the hypothesis is fully established, it may take the form of facts, principles and theories.”
Nature of Hypothesis: 1. Conceptual: Conceptual elements in the framework are involved in a hypothesis. 2. Verbal statement in a declarative form: It is a verbal expression of ideas and concepts. It is not merely mental idea but in the verbal form, the idea is ready enough for empirical verification. 3. It represents the tentative relationship between two or more variables. 4. Forward or future oriented : A hypothesis is future-oriented. It relates to the future verification not the past facts and information. 5. Pivot of a scientific research : All research activities are designed for verification of hypothesis.

Major Types of Hypothesis
Alternative Hypothesis Formal affirmative statement predicting a single research outcome. It is the very opposite of what the null hypothesis predicts. Examples: ➢ There is a significant difference among the varying ratio of squash seeds and commercial feeds on the weight gain of broiler chicken. ➢ There is a significant difference among the varying ratio of squash seeds and commercial feeds on the performance index of broiler chicken. ➢ There is a significant relationship between the amount of squash seeds and the weight gain of broiler chicken.
Null Hypothesis A statement of denial of relationship, difference or an effect . It is usually expressed in the negative form of a statement. Exists when a researcher believes there is no relationship between the two variables, or there is a lack of information to state a scientific hypothesis. This is something to attempt to disprove or discredit. Examples: ➢ There is no significant difference among the varying ratio of squash seeds and commercial feeds on the weight gain of broiler chicken. ➢ There is no significant difference among the varying ratio of squash seeds and commercial feeds on the performance index of broiler chicken. ➢ There is no significant relationship between the amount of squash seeds and the weight gain of broiler chicken.
Casual Hypothesis One which expresses a cause-and-effect relationship between two or more variables. It aims to determine if changes in one variable cause changes in another . Examples: ➢ If the ratio of squash seeds and commercial feeds is varied, then the weight gain of broiler chicken is affected. ➢ If the ratio of squash seeds and commercial feeds is varied, then the performance index of broiler chicken is affected.
Question form
Declarative Statement Provides an anticipated relationship or difference between variables. It is merely a declaration of the independent variables effect on the criterion variable. When researcher makes a positive statement about the outcome if the study, the hypothesis takes the declarative form Ex: There will be a significant difference in the instructional standards of Boys and girls in school
Logical Hypothesis
Predication Form Hypothesis
Sources of hypothesis
What are the key components of a hypothesis?
What is the format of a hypothesis?
Formulation of Testable Hypothesis
Example of Hypothesis
1. Define Variables
Example Will you test that rewards increase reading achievement? Or rewards decrease reading achievement?
