Definition, Nature, and Purpose of Research Research is a key to progress. There can be no progress without research in almost if not all human endeavors. In government, education, trade and commerce, and in all types of industries, research is vital and essential. According to Carter V. Definition, Nature, and Purpose of Research Due to research, man has attained great accelerating progress and is enjoying the products of research such as the fast and comfortable transportation, the wonders of electricity and electronics, potent medicines that promote health and prolong life and many other countless things. According to Good, specific goals and purposes of research are as follows To discover new facts about phenomena, substances, or medicines/vaccines To find answers to problems which are only partially solved by existing methods and information Improve existing techniques and develop new instruments or products. Essential Factors of effective Research There are many types of Research, might be a Project Research, Thesis, Dissertation, or Investigatory Project. All these types of research need the following essential factors in order to produce an effective research; Men – researchers need personnel to assist them in the accomplishment of the objectives no matter how simple or complex the research is. Money – used for expenses incurred in the conduct of research. Some may be funded from governments or private grants Material – refers to all machines and equipment to be used in the conducting the research.

Characteristics of a Good Research A good research means having a systematic technique of thinking, employing specialized tools, instruments, and procedures in order to obtain a more adequate solution of a problem than would be possible under ordinary means. Research starts with a problem, collects data or facts, analyze critically, and reaches decisions based on actual evidence. In general, indicators of a good research are as follows; It gathers new knowledge or data from primary or first-hand sources. It is expert, systematic, and accurate investigation It is logical and objective, applying every possible test to verify the data collected and the procedures employed.
