Writing Your Research Proposal Dr. Ahmad F. Shubati

Chapter 2: RESEARCH PROPOSAL, the research problem, and getting started with the research phases CO2: Examine the scientific method CO3: Compare and contrast quantitative and qualitative research methods

What(s) & Why(s) of Research Proposals Writing your Research Proposal Agenda Summary

Regardless of your research area and the methodology you choose, all research proposals must address the following questions: What you plan to accomplish Why you want to do it and How you are going to do it. What is a Research Proposal?

Why a Research Proposal? Convince others the project you have designed is important, worth the effort You have the ability to carry out the research and report the findings To create a roadmap to do your research Personal Interest  To generate funds

Qualities of a good Research Proposal

Writing the Proposal Pen to Paper

Common Components of a Research Proposal Title/Cover Page Introduction Research Problem Goals & Significance of the Study ( (Aim and Objectives) Research Questions Research Methods References Appendix

Title A good proposal has a good title  The title is a brief statement of the contents of the proposed thesis/dissertation Helps the reader begin to understand the nature of work Simple Relevant Clear Appropriate Concise Current Sensible

Title Where possible, avoid unnecessary phrases. For example: As the above are:

Example Title E-Government in Jordan: Failure and Success Factors

Introduction State the research problem Set the stage for your research question Present the rationale of the proposed study. State the aim and objectives of your experiment. Briefly describe the Research Type to be addressed. Set the delimitation or boundaries of the proposed research. Define key concepts where appropriate.

Research Problem The research problem states the worthiness of research The problem should be: stated clearly in one or two sentences

Example Research Problem Most e-government projects in the Jordan depend on outsourced consultancy along with adequately skilled local staff Experts within these consultancies do not fully understand the cultural, social, economic, political and behavioral aspects of the Jordan which increases the probability of failure and delay. There is limited work done that identifies and analyzes the failure and success factors of e-government projects in the Jordan, hence a knowledge gap that need to be addressed

The Research Question/ Hypothesis Research is about finding answers to questions in order to discover new knowledge The most difficult part of the project is deciding what research question to ask

Good research questions are: Relevant. Manageable Consistent with requirements Clear and simple Interesting

Example Research Questions The research attempts to answer the following questions: Do most e-government projects fail in the Jordan and why? What are the success and failing factors of these projects in the Jordan?

Title: Project Management in Organizations: A Field Study Example

I seek to answer the following research questions: How do people in high work organizations manage projects? What tools and texts do they use? How has project management changed in their organization? Research Questions

“If work organizations use case tools, projects management will get improved”. Other example: If you drop a ball, it will fall toward the ground. Hypothesis

Aim and Objectives Aims and objectives should be realistic, consistent, and link them to methods, timetable, and outcomes.

This research aims at: Investigating and identifying failure and success factors of e-government projects in the Jordan Investigate e-government projects status in the Jordan, Arab & GCC regions Identify , compare and prioritize these projects failure and success factors based on the Jordan implementations Objectives: Example Aim & objectives

Research Methods Research methods are techniques and procedures used by the researcher to obtain data Examples: questionnaire, observation and interviews, Secondary data, any quantitative and qualitative analysis techniques

Data collection involves these methods: Site interviews:  Researcher will conduct one short (average .5 hour) semistructured interview with a manager before contacting participants. Pre-observational interviews:  Researcher will conduct one short (average .25 hour) interview with each participant immediately before each observation to collect information about their professional biography and history with project management, collaboration, and related tools and practices. System monitoring : Participants will be asked to  optionally  use system monitoring software (rescuetime.com) for two weeks, starting with the observation and proceeding continuously until the end of the two-week period.  This software will record use of applications and website. Sources and Collection of Data

References/Bibliography Make sure all the references in your literature review are included and set out correctly. Use the Harvard referencing system
