D. ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS IN BRIEF.
1. ‘Utility and value of a resource vary from time to time and place to place.’ Give any three examples to support the statement. Ans: Utility and value of resources vary from time to time and place to place in the following ways: Earlier human civilisations florist along the river valleys as they are used water for irrigating fields. Now, human beings are using water for generating energy, irrigation, navigation and industries, etc. China and United States of America are generating more wind energy than the India.
2 . Why are human beings considered the most important resource for development? Ans: Human beings considered the most important resource for development because they have an intelligent mind which can make the best use of nature to create more resources. The utility of resources can only be realized by human beings .
3. Differentiate between biotic and abiotic resources. Give examples for each . Ans: Resources which are obtained from biosphere and have a life are known as biotic resources. e.g., bird, animals, plants, etc. While, all non-living resources are known as abiotic resources. e.g., land, soil, minerals, water, etc.
4. Why is there a need for resource planning? Give any three reasons. Ans: Resource planning is important because of the following reasons: It helps in keeping track of remaining resources. It helps in the conservation of various non-renewable resources. It helps in equal distribution of resources among regions that have acute shortage of it. .
5. Mention any six factors on which the utilisation of resources depends. Ans: The six factors on which the utilisation of resources depend are: Availability of resources Skill of human beings Availability of Capital Advancement of technology (tools, machines etc.) Availability of transport. Availability of water
E. ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS.
1. ‘Human needs and wants are neither uniform in all parts of the world nor static over the years.’ Explain the statement giving suitable examples. Ans: It is a fact that the human needs and wants are neither uniform in all parts of the world nor static over the years. For example: In ancient times, people were mainly trying to fulfill their basic needs such as food, cloths and shelter, which were derived from nature. In advanced society, emphasis has been given to utilisation of resources for satisfying the multifarious needs of human beings .
2. Distinguish between renewable and non-renewable resources. Which one of the two would you prefer to use and why? Ans: Renewable resources: These resources can be renewed either naturally or by the human efforts. These are also called inexhaustible resources. The quality of these resources can be affected by improper use. E.g., solar energy, wind energy, etc. Non-Renewable Resources: These resources can’t renew. These are also called exhaustible resources. These are limited on the earth’s surface and their complete utilization can result and exhaustion. E.g., oil, coal, etc. I would prefer renewable resources because it is not harmful for nature and it will reduce dependency on conservation of non-renewable resources.
3. What is meant by sustainable development? Why is sustainable development the need of the hour? Ans: Sustainable development means development that takes place without damaging the environment. It is the need of the hour because most of the resources are limited in quantity. Overuse of many resources has led to their depletion. Therefore, resources should be utilized judiciously so that after fulfilling our present need, they are also conserved for the future generation.
4. Describe the various basis of classification of resources with the help of examples. Ans: Classification of resources: On the basis of exhaustibility: Renewable resources (water, sunlight, air). Non-renewable resources (coal, oil). On the basis of origin: Biotic resources (birds, animal, plants). Abiotic resources (water, land). On the basis of occurrence: Natural resources (water, land, minerals). Man-made resources (roads, buildings, bricks). On the basis of development: Potential resources (uranium in Ladakh). Actual resources (black soil in Maharashtra).
