REST AND SLEEP Rest is a condition in which the body is in decreased state of inactivity with the consequent feeling of being refreshed. Sleep is a state of rest accompanied by altered consciousness and relative activity. Sleep is a complex rhythmic state involving a progression of repeated cycles

Factors Affecting Sleep 1. Developments consideration: Newborn sleeps average 16 hours Infants and preschoolers sleeps average 12 hours. School aged children 10 hours Adolescents no fixed average for sleep. Adults average is about 8 hours Older adults 5-7 hours.

2. Physical Activity: Activity and exercise increase fatigue and thus promote relaxation. 3. Psychological Stress: Various life situations that cause psychological stress affects sleep in two ways: The person experiencing stress may find, i.e. Difficult to obtain the amount of sleep he (she needs). Sleep decreases in amount, which tends to add anxiety and stress.

4. Motivation: A desire to be wakeful and alert helps to sleep. 5. Diet: A small recommended, because it enhances and promotes sleep Caffeine containing beverages interferes with the ability to sleep. 6. Environmental factors: Most people sleep better in their usual home. 7. Lifestyles: Night workers, sleep during the days. 8. Illness: Is physiologic and psychological stressor that interferes with sleep.

Common Sleep Disorder Insomnia Is characterized by difficulty, falling asleep, intermittent sleep, or early awakening from sleep. Hypersomnia Is a condition characterized by excessive sleep, particularly during day.

Assessment of Rest and Sleep Patterns 1. Nursing History: When asleep disturbances is noted, the history should include the following:. The nature of the problem Its cause. The related signs and symptoms When it first began and how often it occurs. The severity of the problems. Coping mechanism of the patient with the problems.

2. Physical Assessment: Findings includes: Diminished energy level Presence of physical weakness: - fatigue. Behavioral characteristics: yawning, rubbing eyes, slow speech. التثاؤب، فرك العينين

Nursing Intervention 1. Preparing a restful environment Comfortable bed, good body alignment A quiet and dark room Suitable room temperature. 2. Offering appropriate bedtime snacks and beverages. 3. Promoting relaxation Warm bath promote relaxation of its muscles thus enhances sleep. 4. Promoting Comfort Measures to relieve pain and anxiety. 5. Scheduling nursing care to avoid unnecessary disturbances 6 .Using medications to produce sleep as doctor prescribed
