Major themes : ‹#›
The Theme of Love : ‹#› Once upon a time, in small-town India, there lived two intelligent boys. One wanted to use his intelligence to make money. One wanted to use his intelligence to start a revolution. The problem was, they both loved the same girl.” Basically, the novel is about love. Narrated from the perspective of Gopal, it unfolds a story about childhood friends Gopal & Raghav who loved Aarti. Gopal, the narrator, is the tragic hero, the Devdas of this love-story plot of the novel. He deeply loved Aarti but sacrificed his love for the happiness of Aarti. The first problem in this love between Gopal and Aarti is perceived when Raghav passes JEE and AIEEE exams with flying colours and Gopal fails to crack these exams. After another failure at AIEEE and JEE, Gopal is broken and in low self-esteem – during this phase, he observes that Aarti and Raghav are in a serious relationship. He passed through pain and agony in this part of the love story.
‹#› His childhood rivalry with Raghav intensifies as his love-interest ‘Aarti’ is also taken-away by Raghav. After starting a college with black money of MLA Shukla-ji, and becoming rich to live a lavish life, Aarti, who is not finding time and space in Raghav’s life full of revolutionary zest, is again attracted towards Gopal. Their old love is revived. Later on, when he faces his corrupt self, he realizes that Aarti may not be happy in married life with a person like him: “But will she love you if she knows who you really are? A corrupt, manipulative bastard?” Thus, he plans to end the love story by faking himself as one who is habituated to debauchery with call-girls. With the marriage of Raghav and Aarti, the love story of Gopal tragically ends. con…
‹#› The The me of Corruption: The theme of corruption unfolds through the story of Gopal’s success in establishing a private engineering college and failure of Raghav in establishing himself as a successful journalist. These trajectories of Gopal and Raghav – one from failure to success and another from successful academic career to failure in professional life – supports the theme of corruption. It is corrupt practice that gives success to Gopal and it is the fight against corruption that leads to the failure of Raghav to run newspaper R2020.
‹#› The theme of Ambition This love story which is set in corrupt contemporary society is driven by the ambition of two prominent characters, Gopal and Raghav. They both are ambitious to make something great in life. The choice of poor Gopal is to make money, acquire position and become powerful, irrespective of being morally right or not. Whereas, Raghav’s ambition is to bring ‘change’ in society. He is ambitious to start a revolution in society to make a corruption free society. Write about how Gopal who failed to crack AIEEE and JEE to get admission in NIT/IIT, starts his own private college with the help of Girish Bedi (education consultant) and black money of MLA Shukla-ji. Write about how Raghav, instead of getting a job and living a happy life, strives to bring in positive change in society…. He's working as a journalist instead of an engineer like his father …. Exposing corruption in Dainik and then starting his own newspaper ‘Revolution 2020’ when thrown out of job . . . and then when his press is ransacked by goons of Shukla-ji, he still struggles to continue his good work in poor condition.
‹#› The Theme of Revolution: The title of the novel ‘Revolution Twenty20’ gives direction to our reading of the novel with an aim to look for the theme of ‘revolution’. This theme is represented by the character, Raghav in this novel. Raghav, an intelligent student, who cracks JEE and AIEEE exams which ensures a happy, rich and successful life as engineer to him. However, he is not meant for such an easy life. He dreams to start a revolution in India – ‘The Great Indian Revolution’. In India wherein there is ‘the Great Indian Education Race’ to crack entrance exams or to start private colleges, Raghav’s wishful thinking seems to be a wild dream and an ambition bound to bring a tragedy.
Article named “Societal Evils in Contemporary India from Chetan Bhagat's Perspective in Revolution 2020” by M. Rakesh Babu , E. Titus Livingston ‹#›
Abstract: ‹#› The paper entitled “Societal Evils in Contemporary India from Chetan Bhagat's Perspective in Revolution 2020”.Chetan says that though writing in a developing country youngsters are failing to get recognize Chetan Bhagat the creative writer in the field of Indian English Literature has portrayed the mechanical life of youngsters in his novel Revolution 2020. The paper brings forth the empathetic life of youngsters and the political problems in a vivid manner. It shows the life of the protagonist and the burden faced by them through relatives and society.
Introduction of Article: ‹#› Chetan Bhagat is usually considered to speak on behalf of the Indian entrepreneurial community. His novels have known to rock Indian sensibility, by providing thought provoking insights as a result of delving into the ever changing paradigms of human conditions that find it entangled in the maze of love, corruption and ambition in his novel, Revolution 2020. This research paper attempts in examining a detailed account of the happenings of Indian society, mainly in the fields of education and politics.
CORRUPTION – A DEEP ROOTED POISON : ‹#› Revolution 2020 discusses in detail about how the Indian government aids in corruption. Bhagat's book talks about how government employees and political leaders actually operate, which lead to untold corruption everywhere. Corruption, the dark side of Indian society that Indians are generally accustomed to, manifests itself in the rotten educational system, coupled with the dishonesty and bribery that exist in public life forms the essence of this novel. Bhagat highlights a major problem that exists among the young who are abandoned due the loss of their loved ones – no one in society cares too much for them!
The young are running out of role models who can mould them to become leaders who not only follow their passion, but also make this world a better place. The protagonist, who has lost both of his parents, is now an orphan, who is despised by his relatives. It is at this juncture of his life, that through a friend of his, he is introduced to a political leader Shuklaji. Shuklaji has been portrayed as one who fits the stereotype that one usually finds in Indian movies – corrupt, loaded with unaccounted cash or black money and quite heartless. Shuklaji is corruption personified. Revolution 2020 rubs it in when it comes to corrupt politicians. Shuklaji finds a way to launder his black money – give some of it to the protagonist to start a college named Gunga Tec. ‹#›
Tremendous Pressure: ‹#› Bhagat points out those students in India are not encouraged to opt for careers or studies based on their passion or choice. Rather, it is the will of the parent that is forced down upon their throats. The protagonist says, “I would be one of those unfortunate cases who had done well, but not well enough “. They become distraught when they are not able to fulfill their parents' desires that were imposed upon them. As a result, students have to lie to their parents when they don't do well, for they wouldn't want to see their parents getting hurt. Parents on the other hand are also insensitive, who tend to scold them rather that reassuring them when things don't go as planned. Bhagat infers that this could be one of the reasons why young people contemplate suicide.
His novels present a clear picture regarding his concerns in the current scenario prevailing in 21st century India. Most of what he wants to convey is through the eyes of the protagonist of his various novels and through leading newspapers. The aspirations of the youth need to be understood and ChetanBhagat has attempted to give voice to it through his writings.. The young person feels that he or she has a voice in Chetan Bhagat's novels, as young people's views are not being seriously considered. It is the elder's voice that matters. ‹#› Conclusion of Article:
