Ridge Count The number of ridges crossing or touching an imaginary line drawn between the point of core and delta of a loop pattern is known as ridge count. And this process of ridge count is known as ridge counting.

Rules for correct ridge counting First locate the exact point of core and delta. Count all the ridges which touch or cross an imaginary line drawn between core and delta. The point of core or delta are not included in the ridge count. Count only those ridges which intervene or pass the imaginary line. A white space must intervene Between delta and ridge count.

Numerical value of ridges in ridge count If the imaginary line passes through the enclosure, then the ridge count 2 is given. If the imaginary line touches the point of bifurcation , then the ridge count 2 is given. In the case of short ridge, long ridge, island, dot ridge or abrupt ridge ending, 1 ridge count is given.

Ridge count is 14

Ridge Tracing In this method, the ridges starting from the lower side of the left delta are traced until they reach nearest to the right delta. By counting the number of intervening ridges between traced ridge and right delta, the pattern are classified as:- Inner (I) Meeting (M) & Outer (O)

Rules for correct Ridge Tracing

1) If the traced ridge ends after starting from Left delta, the next lower ridge is traced towards the Right delta.

2) If the Left delta is a ridge dot , next lower ridge is traced towards right delta.

3) If the traced ridge bifurcates, the lower branch of the bifurcation is further traced towards Right delta.

Classification of Whorl Pattern on the basis of Ridge Tracing Inner (I) Meeting (M) Outer (O) When the traced ridges passes above the Right delta and the number of intervening ridges between the Right delta and traced ridge, is 3 or more. When the traced ridge meets the Right delta or it passes above or below the Right delta with maximum of 2 ridges intervening them. When the traced ridges passes below the Right delta and the number of intervening ridges between the Right delta and traced ridge, is 3 or more.
