General Intro King Khalid International Airport ( مطار الملك خالد الدولي ) IATA : RUH ICAO : OERK It is located 35 kilometers north of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Designed by the architectural firm HOK, and Arabian Bechtel Company Limited served as the construction manager on behalf of the Saudi government . The land area allocated for this airport is among the largest (second-largest, after King Fahd International Airport) in the world. The airport occupies an area of 375 square kilometers (93,000 acres ). This airport was an alternative landing site for NASA's Space Shuttle . Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport (KKIA) was ranked 11th in the world’s on-time performance (OTP) star rating for large airports in 2018
History King Khalid International Airport (KKIA) opened for operations in late 1983. Early airport was opened in 1946 which is now Riyadh air base. There are five main passenger terminals at the airport, four of them were built when the airport started operation in November 1982 , and terminal 5 was opened in 2016.
Administrative Body & Managemet Owner : The Saudi general authority of civil aviation.(GACA) Riyadh Airports Company is currently managing and operating King Khalid International Airport. Terminal 5 is Operated by Irish airport operator Dublin Airport Authority, it is Saudi's first privately run airport terminal and can handle 12 million passengers per year.

Geographical Details It is located 35 kilometres (22 mi) north of Riyadh. Latitude / Longitude: 24°57'27"N / 46°41'55"E Elevation : 2049 ft King Khaled Airport possesses one of the world’s tallest air control traffic towers. Standing 81m high. most defining features is a mosque located in the centre of the passenger terminal. Capable of accommodating 5,000 worshippers inside and another 5,000 in its outside plaza. Also notable is the airport’s 500,000m² of landscaping, which includes more than 225,000 trees, vines, shrubs and ground cover plants. All the plants selected for the site are tolerant to the region’s arid climate . Two large three-level garages have been constructed directly in front of the passenger terminals, one on either side of the airport mosque . The design capacity of the garages is 11,600 vehicles.

Terminals There are five main passenger terminals at the airport Each terminal has 8 gates All terminals are a triangular shape structure except terminal 5. Terminal 1 is used for all international flights Terminal 2 is used by all international flights for SkyTeam members, including Saudia , and Flynas . Terminal 3 is closed for renovations. It was used to service all Saudia and Flynas domestic flights until Terminal 5 was opened for operation. Terminal 4 is unused, having never been utilized since construction, and remains without air bridges. Now it is under development which will last for five years .
Terminals Contd.. Terminal 5 is the newest terminal opened in 2016, which is now used by Saudia and Flynas for domestic flights. Terminal 5 is a rectangular building which can serve 16 narrow-body or 8 wide-body aircraft. Terminal 5 is Operated by Irish airport operator Dublin Airport Authority, it is Saudi's first privately run airport terminal and can handle 12 million passengers per year.
Royal Terminal Heads of state and other high-ranking VIP visitors to the kingdom are greeted in the Royal Pavilion. The Royal Pavilion has open spaces, garden areas, and fountains and ceremonial hall . General Aviation Terminal A general aviation complex has been constructed north of runway number 1 for use by private aircraft and is reached by a special access road which runs north from the airport access highway. The general aviation facility includes a passenger terminal, aircraft parking and maintenance facilities, taxiways and parking for visitors. Annual Pax Turnover King Khaled International Airport has witnessed a steady increase in passengers during the last decade. In 1998, it handled just more than eight million passengers and had 60,000 aircraft movements . In 2017, 24.8 million passengers used the airport . In 2018 ,26.6 million passengers used the airport with 215,000 aircraft movements.

Future Expansion The airport will be linked with the city's new metro system, and the GACA has reached an agreement with Riyadh Development Authority for the purpose. The metro system will help passengers reach the city center quickly and comfortably. (85 percent completed) Opening of saudia executive terminal at terminal 3 by 2030 Expansion of terminal 3 and 4 to increase pax turnover from 25 to 40 million by 2038.
Accidents And Incidents On 27 July 2010 at 11:38 local time, Lufthansa Cargo Flight 8460, an MD-11 registered D-ALCQ, crashed upon landing at the airport and was damaged beyond repair in the ensuing fire. The Pilot in command and the First Officer – the only two persons on board – were uninjured On 4 November 2017, a missile fired by Yemen rebels in response to the Saudi Arabian-led intervention in Yemen was intercepted by Saudi Air Force near the airport. No damage was reported, but passengers inside the airport's domestic terminal reacted to the detonation
