The Role Of Extension in Sustainable Agricultural Development

The Role Of Extension In Sustainable Agriculture Development There are three major lessons for extension: I t is important to make new things visible; An important role of extension is to make visible the state of the environment and the extent to which present farming practices are untenable; and E xtension can demonstrate the feasibility of sustainable practices.

The Role Of Extension In Sustainable Agriculture Development Development as a Concept Development has been defined as a “ form of action or intervention to influence the entire process of social change ”. It implies a change in, or a movement away from a previous situation. All societies are changing, and rural extension attempts to develop certain aspects of society, in order to influence the nature and speed of the change . Objectives of Development Building up people so they can build a future for themselves; Introduction of new ideas into a social system in order to improve higher per capital incomes and levels of living through modern production methods and improved social organization; and Transformation of a traditional or pre-modern society into types of technology and associated social organizations that characterized the advanced stable nations.

The Role Of Extension In Sustainable Agriculture Development Forms/Elements of the Process of Development Economic Development - the development of the economic productive base of any society which will produce and the goods and materials required for life; Social Development - the provision of a range of amenities and services i.e. health, education, welfare) which care for the non-productive needs of the society; Human Development - the development of people themselves, both individual and communally, to realize their full potential, to use their skills and talents, and to play a constructive part of shaping their own society; and Territorial Development - development of a specific region (space) achievable by exploiting the specific socio-economic, environmental and institutional potential of the area, and its relationships with external subjects

The Role Of Extension In Sustainable Agriculture Development Sustainable Development T he World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED) defines sustainable development as " meeting the needs of the present without compromising he ability of future generations to meet their own “ Sustainable development focuses on ensuring short-term improvements don't harm future development potential, considering environmental, social, and financial aspects for long-term viability . Sustainable Development is further described as: “ Maintaining or prolonging the productive capacity of the natural resource base to meet the needs of human society .“ “ The capacity of a country's natural resources and life support system to provide the needed goods and services for its present and future generation is a main determinant of sustainable development .”

The Role Of Extension In Sustainable Agriculture Development Agricultural extension increasingly focuses on advocating sustainable practices to manage land, soil, water, air, and biodiversity for enduring agricultural productivity. Its evolving role emphasizes promoting sustainable resource management within agriculture . Rural Development (RD) Rural development has been defined as “ a process through which rural poverty is alleviated by sustained increase in productivity and incomes of low income rural workers and households ”. RD is “ a process which leads to a continuous rise in capacity of rural people to control the environment, accompanied by wider distribution of benefits resulting from such control ”. Rural development aims to uplift rural communities economically and socially, ensuring improved livelihoods and security for their inhabitants through transformative processes.

The Role Of Extension In Sustainable Agriculture Development Rural development involves analyzing issues, identifying problems, and proposing solutions, typically within specific programs or projects aimed at addressing identified challenges. Rural development hinges on agriculture as it sustains the livelihoods of the majority of rural households, necessitating focused attention on agricultural initiatives for holistic progress . Rural development strategies involve targeted programs that implement various projects within specific rural areas, encompassing both agricultural and non-agricultural initiatives. These efforts are fundamental in both government and non-government sectors to support rural communities . Agricultural extension is an integral part of rural development strategies.

The Role Of Extension In Sustainable Agriculture Development Aims of Rural Development Main Objectives : e nhancing rural quality of life through targeted initiatives and infrastructure development. Specifically, RD Efforts aim to : Increase access to benefits; Increase the capacity of people to control their environment; Ensure wider distribution of benefits; and Promote utilization of technologies. Guiding RD efforts to alleviate rural poverty by reducing incidence and severity: Increasing employment (increase opportunities ); Increasing efficiency (resource utilization, resource productivity ); Sustainability; Equity (broader access ); and Empowerment (increased participation ).

The Role Of Extension In Sustainable Agriculture Development Agricultural Development Agricultural development refers to the steps taken to enable agriculture to reach its full potential. These steps involve gathering knowledge, adopting technology, and managing resources like inputs and outputs; A key aspect of agricultural progress involves farmers making the most of agricultural resources by using better knowledge, skills, and access to helpful innovations and support services . As a result, agricultural progress shows up as better efficiency in farming . Accelerators for Agricultural Development Education for development; Production Credit; Group action by farmers; Improving and expanding agricultural land; and National planning for agricultural development

The Role Of Extension In Sustainable Agriculture Development Essentials for Agricultural Modernization Efficient production methods developed by research or adapted local knowledge systems; Access to necessary materials and tools sourced locally; Demand for agricultural goods and a favorable market atmosphere; A flexible outreach system; Basic infrastructure like transportation and storage facilities; Assistance services such as rural credit; Government policies that encourage farming; and Ongoing research to keep up with evolving technology .

The Role Of Extension In Sustainable Agriculture Development Sustainable Agriculture in the Context of Sustainable Development The negative effects on the environment and society caused by modern or traditional farming methods, which use a lot of resources and are highly industrialized or intensive, led to the rise and progress of sustainable agriculture as a different approach to managing agricultural resources . SA has evolved from the three perspectives : " as a system of production to achieve food-self-reliance "; " as a concept of stewardship ", and " as vehicle for sustaining rural communities .“
