ROOFING MATERIALS

CONTENT

INTRODUCTION Roofing material is the outermost layer on the roof of a building, sometimes self-supporting, but generally supported by an underlying structure. A building's roofing material provides shelter from the natural elements. A roof is a fundamental element of any structure and it serves as a layer between the interiors and the outside world. While giving protection against external elements, roofing sheet also add to the aesthetic appeal of your house. The primary purpose of a roofing sheet is to provide protection to the interior of a structure, including the house, yard or any other space, against pollutants, weather conditions and dust. Its role is crucial in ensuring the longevity of the structure and creating a comfortable and habitable environment inside.

What is roofing sheets ? Roofing sheets play a vital role in any structure as they form the essential component of a roof. These sheets ensure the durability of the roof structure, providing protection against various elements such as pollutants, weather conditions, and dust. Choosing the right roofing sheet involves considering factors like lifespan, qualities, and its impact on the overall property. Roofing sheets are available in different materials, each with its unique qualities and suitability for different roof types.  The primary purpose of a roofing sheet is to provide protection to the interior of a structure, including the house, yard or any other space, against pollutants, weather conditions and dust. Its role is crucial in ensuring the longevity of the structure and creating a comfortable and habitable environment inside.

DIFFERENT TYPES TO ROOFING SHEETS CORRUGATED SHEET ROOFING : Corrugated roofing sheets refer to corrugated galvanized steel sheets used for roofing. They feature a characteristic corrugated profile with alternating ridges and grooves that make them rigid and strong. Corrugated roofing sheets have been used extensively for agricultural and industrial buildings due to their durability, lightweight, easy installation and low cost.  ADVANTAGES Affordability: Corrugated metal roofing is generally less expensive than flat metal roofing, making it a more cost-effective option. Thermal Insulation : They have excellent thermal performance as they consist of corrugated profiles that create air pockets which improve insulation. This can help to reduce the heat transfer through the roof, decreasing cooling/heating costs for the building.  Easy installation: Corrugated metal roofing is relatively easy to install, especially when compared to other roofing materials The thermal conductivity of still air is much lower than that of steel and other metals. So the air pockets formed between the corrugated steel sheets and roof frame provide very effective insulation for the building. DISADVANTAGES imited design options: Corrugated metal roofing is available in a limited range of designs and colors, which may not suit all architectural styles. Noise: The corrugated design of the metal roofing can create noise when it rains or hails, which can be a nuisance to some homeowners. Maintenance: Corrugated metal roofing requires regular maintenance to prevent rust and corrosion, which can be time-consuming and costly.

TYPES OF CORRUGATED SHEETS ALUMINIUM SHEETS GALVANISED IRON SHEETS POLYSTER PAINTED SHEETS PVC PLASTISOL – COATED SHEETS BITUMEN SHEETS

ALUMINIUM CORRUGATED SHEETS THESE SHEETS ARE EXTREMELY LIGHT AND HAVE HIGH STRENGTH-TO-WEIGHT RATIO. ALUMINIUM IS AN INCREASINGLY POPULAR CHOICE FOR INSTALLATION AS IT IS RESISTANT TO CORROSION IN ANY KIND OF ENVIRONMENT . IT IS ALSO RESISTANT TO FUMES AND VAPOURS OF ORGANIC COMPOUND AND CHEMICALS LIKE HYDROLIC ACID , AMMONIA , CARBON DIOXIDE ETC . THE SHINE AND BRIGHTNESS OF ALUMINIUM LIVENS ITS SURROUNDING, AS IT DOESN’T’ STAINS. ALUMINIUM CORRAGTED SHEETS HAVE VARIETY OF COLORS AND TEXTURES WHICH PROTECT THEM AND ENHENACE THEIR FUTHER APPERANCE . This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA-NC

GALVANISED IRON SHEET Corrugated Galvanized Iron or Steel sheets are a lightweight roofing material made of thin sheets, stiffened by corrugations. the material used is actually steel (which is iron alloyed with carbon for strength, commonly 0.3% carbon), and only the surviving vintage sheets may actually be made up of 100% iron.  The corrugations increase the bending strength of the sheet in the direction perpendicular to the corrugations, but not parallel to them, because the steel must be stretched to bend perpendicular to the corrugations. Corrugations, such as waves, considerably increase the strength and stiffness of the lightweight material. Indeed, without these waves, the metal sheets are fragile and highly deformable. The steel used is mild steel for forming, which is galvanized to increase the durability of the metal sheets, and consequently allowing them to better withstand the weather .

POLYSTER PAINTED SHEETS Polyester paint is a type of organic coating applied to the metal sheets. It typically consists of a thermosetting polymer that adheres well to the metal substrate. Polyester painted coatings provide good weather resistance and durability, making them suitable for various environments. P olyester coatings are generally more susceptible to scratching and chipping. While they offer adequate protection against UV rays and harsh weather conditions, they may require more frequent maintenance to preserve their appearance performance . Polyester painted box profile sheets are available in a wide range of colours and finishes, providing versatility and aesthetic appeal to complement different architectural styles. Polyester painted box profile sheets are relatively flexible and can be formed to fit various shapes and profiles. However, excessive bending may cause the paint to crack, affecting the aesthetics and potentially leading to corrosion at exposed areas.  Polyester painted box profile sheets are generally more budget-friendly compared to plastisol coated sheets. They offer a cost-effective solution while still providing decent weather resistance and aesthetic appeal

PVC PLASTISOL Plastisol sheeting is a very high quality galvanised steel sheet with a primer paint and the PVC rolled onto it giving a very durable sheet, that doesn't fade or scratch easily and with an expected lifespan of 30+years Plastisol is a steel sheet that treated with a primer paint. PVC is then rolled on top of it. Known for its durability, PVC plastisol coated sheets do not fade or scratch easily. It is also weather-resistant and lightweight.

Bitumen sheets Bitumen has been a popular roofing material for thousands of years, because is its versatile , durable, cost effective and above all highly waterproof, making it an ideal system for both new build and refurbishment roofing projects.
