About This Presentation

The Rydberg formula helps to determine the wavenumber or wavelengths of hydrogen spectral lines obtained in the hydrogen spectrum. Previously, Johann Jakob Balmer discovered an empirical formula to determine the wavelengths of hydrogen spectral lines obtained in the visible region of the hydrogen sp...

Rydberg equation

A formula that helps in spectral
measurements
1.
It plays a vital role in the measurement of
the spectral energies of electron
transitions..
2.
3.
It applies to all series of the hydrogen
spectrum.
It also measures the spectral
emissions of single-electron atomic
systems.

History of Rydberg formula
Balmer formula
Rydberg formula
Bohr depiction
In 1885, Balmer invented
an empirical relation to
calculate the wavelengths
of spectral emissions in
the visible region of the
hydrogen spectrum.
In 1888, Johannes Rydberg
generalized the Balmer
formula to extend it to all
spectral series of the
hydrogen spectrum. Since
then, it has simplified the
calculation of spectral lines
in single-electron atomic
systems. The Rydberg
formula measures the
wavenumbers of spectral
emissions.
The Rydberg formula did
not get much practical
significance until Neil
Bohr explained it
theoretically in 1913.

Importance
of Rydberg
formula
It helps to estimate the wavenumbers of the spectral energies.
It helps to determine the known and unknown spectral emissions.
It contributes to the composition analysis of the atoms..
It helps identify the region in which the spectral line belongs in the
electromagnetic spectrum.
