About This Presentation

Whether you are writing in a notebook, building a house or taking your daily medicines, forests play an important role in all these activities. Yet, we don’t always make the connection between these activities and the forests. Therefore, March 21st is celebrated as International Forestry Day to co...

WORLD FOREST DAY WORLD OZONE DAY NAME:S.HARISHKUMAR REGISTER NO:22164107 COURSE: B.SC(HONS) AGRICULTURE AGR205 FARMING SYSTEM AND SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE 2(1+1)

FORESTS 1. Important natural resource dominated by trees.

2.It is most important natural habitat for wildlife.

3.About 1/3 of the world’s land surface is covered with forests.

4.Forests cover over 30% of the earth’s surface.

HISTORY OF WORLD FOREST DAY 1. The International Day of Forests was established on the 21 st day of March, by resolution of the United Nations General Assembly on November 28, 2012.

2. International Day of Forests was observed for the first time on March 21, 2013.

3. In November 1971, at the Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organization, voted to establish “World Forestry Day”

HOW WORLD FOREST DAY CELEBRATE 1. World forestry day is celebrated every year by visiting the local forests in order to learn more about their contributions towards the well-being of people.

2.The countries which are the forest-rich (occupying almost 2/3 of total forested area) includes Canada, the Russian Federation, Brazil, the United States, Democratic Republic of Congo, Australia, Indonesia, China, Peru and India

IMPORTANCE OF WORLD FOREST DAY 1. Shelter, Shade, Refuge, and Clean air and water.

2.It inhabit the variety of invertebrates, fungi and bacteria playing significant role in balancing the nutrients cycle in the soil and forest,

3.Almost 30% of the total land worldwide is occupied by the forests containing over 60,000 tree species which are ultimately the great resources of the food, fuel, fodder, essential oils, resins, latex, gums, medicines, fiber, water, woods for the population of around 1.6 billion poorest people of the world.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS WATER CYCLE REGULATION: Forests play a crucial role in regula ting the water cycle by influencing precipitation, evaporation and runoff. SOIL EROSION PREVENTION: Forests act as natural barriers to prevent soil erosion, preserving land quality and fertility. CARBON SEQUESTRATION: Forests are vital for capturing and storing carban dioxide, this helping in mitigating climate change.

WORLD OZONE DAY 1.On December 19,1994, the United Nations General Assembly, proclaimed September 16 to be the International day for the preservation of the ozone layer, commemorating the date when Montreal protocol was signed.

2. The World Ozone Day was first celebrated on September 16, 1995.

IMPORTANCE World Ozone Day or International Day for Preservation of Ozone Layer is observed on September 16 every year. The motto behind its observation is spreading awareness among people about Ozone Layer depletion and searching for possible solutions to preserve it.

EFFECTS OF OZONE DEPLETION Ozone depletion is affecting the human health and environment negatively, as it allows the penetration of UV radiations to reach the Earth.

1. Effects on Eyes- Blindness, Cataract

2. Effects on Skin- Skin cancer, Melanoma and Non-melanoma

3. Effects on Human Immunity- Suppression of immune response to skin cancer, infectious diseases and other antigens

EFFECTS 4.DNA Damage and Lung Diseases- DNA dam due to mutations because UV radiations dis. Biomolecules.

5.Effects of Hydrogen Peroxide on Human Health-Highly reactive species like hydrogen peroxide is produced which has bad effects on human health.

6.Effect of Food Shortage on Human Population- UV radiations are disturbing developmental and physiological processes which is decreasing the productivity of crops.

SOLUTION OF OZONE DEPLETION Limit the use of private vehicles, solutions are car pooling, walking, cycling etc.

2. Use ecofriendly household cleaning products

3. Avoid use of fertilizers, pesticides etc.

4. Banning the use of dangerous nitrous oxide

5. Also, change light bulbs to compact fluorescent light, to minimize energy consumption which will slow down global warming and reduce depletion of ozone layer
